Rare TMaine Posted June 21, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Does anyone know if it is reasonable and safe to walk from the Plaka/Acropolis area to the National Museum? It appears to be about 2 miles away which is not a problem for us to walk but I am not sure what kinds of neighborhoods the route will take us through. Thanks for any suggestions! Phxazzcruisers Posted June 21, 2012 #3 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Depending on when you go, it will be hot and muggy in the Summer, and test polluted. Just as in all large Cities, watch your pockets, cameras and valuables, but yes, you can walk from the Acropolis to the National Museum. We walked all over Athens several times on several trips. Fblack Posted June 21, 2012 #4 Share Posted June 21, 2012 On the edge of the Plaka they have a little tourist train that runs in a 40-50 minute circle of historical viewing points. About half way through their tour you can get off at the Acropolis. If you like, you can get back on the train during one of its future trips. Or just stay in the area and see the Acropolis and Museums. The starting point for the train is right across from an outdoor cafe and down the street from the Tower of the Winds. It's not very expensive and can save you the walk to the Acropolis. http://www.sunshine-express.gr/Welcome_Page.htm
Rare TMaine Posted June 21, 2012 Author #5 Share Posted June 21, 2012 We will be going in September so hopefully it won't be too hot, though we aren't really bothered by it too much. Thank you for the information!
Rare TLCOhio Posted June 21, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 21, 2012 When in Athens, we took the subway from near the Plaka to the reach this great art museum in a quicker, easier, more pleasant way. Many parts of Athens are fairly so-so and some areas are even lesser in quality. I can't image wanting to walk ALL of that distance, especially if it's hot there, plus what has happened to the economy lately, sadly, in Greece. If you have any interests in art and/or history, this museum has a super-star collection. It is organized around the historic evolution from Greek designs to the Roman periods, etc. Very, very good. Below are a few of my visuals samples for this museum, plus a couple for Athens. For those who have not yet visited Greece, the good news is that the wonderful Plaka is right handy and next door to the famed Acropolis area. That makes things so much easier. On going up the hill, be careful as the stone steps can be slick in areas. And you will be looking up and forgetting to watch where and how you are stepping. It's well worth the effort getting there to the top. It is amazing history and architecture!! Also, we had a private guide to help us on this spectacular site. It's not cheap, but it was well worth it to know more on what you are seeing and why it is so important. You can check out my earlier post on “Athens Tips, Suggestions, Examples to Enjoy!” for many details, ideas and interesting visuals on this great city. Lots of ideas here from me and others experienced with Athens. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1101008 THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio Did a June 7-19, 2011, Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Check these postings and added info at: http://www.boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1426474 Here are four of my sampling from Athens’ very historic National Archaeological Museum featuring the world's largest collection of ancient Greek antiquities. We loved this great range of art, its history, evolution to the Roman periods, etc.: On Acropolis hill with our very knowledgeable private guide we lined up at the site, she helped us appreciate all of the history and architectural details there at this famed site going back 700 years before Christ.: Outdoor dining in the Plaka in the heart of Athens’ historic area. Lots of music and fun, shopping, music, plus good food. Don't miss this part of Athens!!:
