transatlantic fan Posted June 23, 2012 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2012 I have had a look on Cunards website and it states the places you can get wi-fi but says nothing about getting it in the stateroom. Would anyone know if it is available in the staterooms? Many thanks

Many thanks Yes, wifi connectivity is available in the staterooms on all three Cunard ships. It can be a little flaky though and the connection's not what you would call fast. Happyboating Posted June 23, 2012 #5 Share Posted June 23, 2012 When i egister for my free minutes can i then use both my laptop in my room and the wired computers in the computer centre? Yes you can but you must remember to put "1.1.1.1/" in the address line when you want to log out from your laptop otherwise you will use up all your credit without realising it. The new instruction from Cunard is to type "logout.com" in the address line but I couldn't get that to work so I used the old logout instruction. When the instruction works - whichever one you use - you will then get a logout screen which will detail the minutes used on that session and how many minutes you have remaining on your credit. I hope this helps and that you have a wonderful cruise.
Whitemarsh Posted June 23, 2012 #6 Share Posted June 23, 2012 If the internet speed is ever slow in your stateroom, sit by the door. It worked for me.

Happyboating Posted June 23, 2012 #8 Share Posted June 23, 2012 Thank you so much i am sure we will, we go tomorrow.:) I'm so envious - we disembarked from the QE yesterday and I'm still crying (I didn't want to leave!). I trust you have registered with your Roll Call? I've been reading CC for a couple of years but finally plucked up the courage to register a couple of months ago and joined the Roll Call for our cruise. We met a lovely group of people who we socialised with every night. I even exchanged email addresses with a couple so hopefully we'll stay in touch and meet up again at some point in the future. Have a FAB time.
Rare BlueRiband Posted June 23, 2012 #9 Share Posted June 23, 2012 On QM2 I even got WiFi on my balcony. However the connection speeds varied with the time of day and the itinerary of the ship. Midmorning and early evening seemed to have peak demands on bandwidth. It was also faster in the Atlantic then in the Caribbean - probably due to vessel density the later area. FWIW, some claim that the connection is faster on the computer center machines because they don't have to go through the stateroom WiFi router. Either way, you will save minutes by composing or reading your email off line.

Austcruiser84 Posted June 23, 2012 #12 Share Posted June 23, 2012 I'm sure this has been asked before, but what are the different Internet rates/packages available on QM2? What do people think represented best value out of the packages? Finally, I assume connecting my iPad to the ship's wireless Internet won't be an issue? Rare BlueRiband Posted June 23, 2012 #13 Share Posted June 23, 2012 Is there a way to compose or read mail offline (i.e., without the clock running) on the Computer Center machines? Unfortunately I don't think working offline is an option on the computer center machines. If I remember the setup the only site one can get without logging on is the Cunard site. There were no other programs - like Word or Wordpad - that are available.

If I remember the setup the only site one can get without logging on is the Cunard site. There were no other programs - like Word or Wordpad - that are available. That's correct. In the early days of computers on ships (Good old days of QE2, sorry, Louise ), you could use Word to compose, copy the message to the clipboard, open the ship's email program, paste in the message, add an address and hit "send." At first, QE2 didn't charge you if you were online for less than 30 seconds or something like that. It became a sort of game among the computer-savvy to try to beat that limit and send a "free" email. Someone at Cunard figured this out, and they added a delay ("please wait") after you hit "send," which pushed the time over the limit and you had to pay for the email. Now, as soon as you sign in, you're using your expensive minutes. The speed does vary. I suppose it's load and maybe where in the satellite's range you are. One way to check the speed is to poke around the Cunard site. That is free. If you can't get those pages to load in a decent amount of time, give up and try again later. T5LHR Posted June 24, 2012 #15 Share Posted June 24, 2012 I am rather looking forward to being incommunicado for the 7 days... Although, I am going to make two calls from my mobile, which will be prohibitively expensive, to my mum and dad, because I can't go a week without speaking to them just to see they are OK and that I love them... Oh lord... pass me the bucket...
Xavias Posted June 24, 2012 #16 Share Posted June 24, 2012 If you open the door to your stateroom the wifi speeds up dramatically nomatter where you sit.
Happyboating Posted June 24, 2012 #17 Share Posted June 24, 2012 I assume connecting my iPad to the ship's wireless Internet won't be an issue? Just ensure that your software is up to date as they recommend a minimum of iOS 5.1. Enjoy your cruise.
Happyboating Posted June 24, 2012 #18 Share Posted June 24, 2012 Unfortunately I don't think working offline is an option on the computer center machines. If I remember the setup the only site one can get without logging on is the Cunard site. There were no other programs - like Word or Wordpad - that are available. This is just a thought as, sadly, I'm not onboard at present, but you might try clicking on "start" (bottom left hand corner of the screen) and then clicking on "accessories". From there you should see "notepad" in the list. If so, you can type into that and then copy and paste into an email. If its not automatically word wrapping, you can click on "format", at the top of the Notepad screen, and that gives you the option to "text wrap for Word". I have a vague recollection that I have beaten the dreaded time clock using that system before, however, these days I use my iPad. If anyone is onboard reading this I would be interested to know if my memory is, indeed, still working correctly and if this little trick works.
