LindaM Posted July 6, 2012 #51 Share Posted July 6, 2012 We just booked a room at the The Pillars Hotel in Ft Lauderdale. They offer a pre-post cruise with transportation, hotel and breakfast. The hotel is only 18 rooms but looks absolutely wonderful. We're very excited to stay at this hotel. Not to mention, the water taxi stops right on their patio! That hotel is wonderful. The rooms are on the smallish side, but very nice. You might want to try Casablanca, a great restaurant---just a short walk to the beach. Pillars is one of the "Best Small Hotels of the World" ( or was at one time!)

Hope you enjoy your stay. Hyatt also has a water taxi stop right at their Marina. It's so convenient and we enjoy being able to hop on and off right there 'on property'. We've decided to go with HAL's hotel package with transfers from airport to hotel to ship and we're in the Westin which isn't near the port, but we want our hands held by HAL. And interestingly the price isn't much more than we'd pay for a hotel in FLL in high season. No question but it's a great choice for some. Westin Hotels are almost all just fine and having HAL's assistance takes all the stress off you. Hope you enjoy your stay and your cruise. :)
m*u*g* Posted July 6, 2012 #53 Share Posted July 6, 2012 I don't recall any hotels convenient for walking into that port area. We stayed at the Sheraton (free on points) and they charged $10/p for the shuttle. We booked SAS ($6/p) and they were prompt and courteous. Even with a $14 tip, it was $10 cheaper than the hotel shuttle for the 6 of us.
Ray in NH Posted July 6, 2012 #54 Share Posted July 6, 2012 Why would anyone even consider walking to the port with luggage? There aren't even sidewalks once you enter the port area. Some people do. As said, the walk to the entrance isn't bad from a number of hotels in the area but once you're through the gate, it's quite a hike to the ship's pier with a constant stream of traffic, in the heat and humidity, with no sidewalks dragging your luggage. About the only time it might(?) make sense (at least to me) is if one was cruising on Princess, since their piers are closest to the gates. Typhoon1 Posted July 6, 2012 #56 Share Posted July 6, 2012 In Old San Juan, one can easily wheel their suitcase from the Sheraton across to the Old San Juan docks. Very True. San Diego would be another from the Holiday Inn. The OP was asking about Fort Lauderdale.

scopewest Posted July 7, 2012 #58 Share Posted July 7, 2012 We walked from the Embassy Suites to the port only to be stopped by the guard who said if we were not boarding a ship, we couldn't just wander around. We walked back the next day because we were taking the day cruise on the ship that left from the first pier, and this time we were let through. But I wouldn't want to walk to any of the other piers dragging luggage, the piers are not close to each other, and on our last HAL cruise the pier was quite some distance from the guard shack.
