Sewing Clothes For A Cruise

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

Y'all, at 60 years of age, I attempted my first scallops! These are the cap sleeves of a blouse I'm planning to wear Easter Sunday and on my next cruise. What do you think? How did I do?

I think I want to topstitch the scallops and front facing. I was thinking a gold thread. Any opinions?

Looks beautiful.  What size/type needle did you use on your machine?

I used a universal 70/10 and a narrow (2.0x 0.5mm) zigzag. A straight stitch worked well on pure straight edges, but the tiniest bit of bias went completely wonky.

I somehow managed to cut a small slit near the shoulder seam. I got creative repairing it. It's on the back, so my hair will cover it. It's about a half inch long.20240329_162143.thumb.jpg.b33e58a05d2489a74623f48f1f106158.jpg

Looks great.  I have made unwanted cuts ion some of my clothing.  Most time I so a machine embroidery over the slit.

Have you done under stitching?  I started to use that in some case instead of top stictching.

I did understitch the neck facing, but decided I wanted the slight decorative look of top stitching. I did not attempt underscoring the scallops. I definitely would have pulled my hair out trying that.

I agree under stitching the scallops would have been a hair puller.  A decorative stitch was the way to go.

Was the gold thread metallic?

No, it was regular thread, just gold colored. I didn't want to mess with metallic since the fabric had been such a pain to work with.

Here's the final project. I made hubby's shirt a year or two ago.5b288ebc6dfd4b6687963b472ff43f97.thumb.jpg.b4aeb33c22637509040aaa4d6b45fb00.jpg

Thank you! The best part about sewing is that no one else had anything even a bit similar.

This is my selection of hand knit tops for casual nights on our upcoming cruise.  I will pair them with capris.
