Postiano but not Sorrento.....?

We have already done Sorrento (and didnt rate it much) so have no real urges to return.

We have done Capri and Pompei so want to do something different.

We are slightly in a rush as we booked the cruise 10 days ago and leaving in 2 days time and now rapidly trying to research everything as well sort out my dresses and shoes.

On another panicked thread I asked about the gastronomy tour but if i dont get any feedback on that we need to move on to plan B.....which is....

How can we get to Postiano but without going to Sorrento?

It seems like most of the ferries go there first...but is there a direct one? Does the ferry to Sorrento then go on to Postiano or do you have to get off and change ferries?

Also are there 2 ports in Naples..I heard that there were and so the ferry may take you back to the wrong one?

The fastest way to Positano is through Sorrento (although you can get to the Amalfi Drive without actually going into the heart of the city). There are only a limited number of jetboats/hydrofoils from Naples to Positano and most do stop in Sorrento Its also possible to take a jetboat/hydrofoil out to Capri (50 min from Naples) and catch a boat back to Postitano but this takes much longer and there are few boats doing this route.

Another method is to take the Circumvesuviania Train from Naples to Sorrento and then pick up the SITA bus that goes to Positano. This entire journey takes about 2 hours (if you make a good bus connection in Sorrento). Personally, when we want to go to Positano from Naples we just rent a car which allows us to visit both Positano and Ravello (our two favorite places on the coast) during a port day.

I will add a major warning about renting a car (we do this quite often when we are in Italy). Parking at Positano is a very bit problem (enough to make some reconsider renting a car). There are 3 options for parking. 1. Park along the Amalfi Drive above Positano and walk (or ride the local Orange bus) down into the town. This parking is free, but it is hard to find a close spot (some park more then a mile away) since many who work in Positano take advantage of this option. 2. Drive into Positano (there is only a single one-way street) and pray you can find on the street parking (difficult) for which there are parking meters. 3. Drive into Positano and park and one of the few parking lots/garages. This will be very expensive and there is no guarantee that any lot/garage will have room.

We dont want to hire a car as one of us is reading a map and the other is watching the road so we miss out on lots of scenery.

We have hired a car lots of times but now and then its nice to let someone else do the driving.

We have now decided to do the Gastronomy Tour with AP tours as we get to see the local scenery, visit a vinyard, watch olive oil and cheese being made and finish off at an ice cream factory.

Sounds wonderful.....

Thank you everyone for all the info.

We have hired Joe Banana Tours to take us to Pompeii, Positano and Ravello--but NOT Sorrento. We've not been to Sorrento, but I've read so many posts where people say that Sorrento is their least favorite, so we just decided to spend the time in Positano and Ravello instead.

Your gastronomy tour sounds great. However, the olive harvest won't be for another few months. Don't be disapointed if they are not actually pressing and bottling while you are there. The frantoio should still be a very interesting place.
