Island Princess Balcony Question

We are thinking of booking the Island Princess 10 day Panama Canal cruise and would like information on which decks have covered balconies. We were recently on the Carribean Princess and had a completely covered balcony which we did not like. I looked at a few pictures but could make a judgement. We would appreciate any information on balcony selection for the Panama Canal. Thanks.

Cabins located on Caribe deck generally have the largest balconies of any regular cabin on the ship at about 9'x9' vs 9'x5' for cabins on other decks. The interior of the cabin will be the same as other regular (non-suite) cabins. The balconies on Caribe deck are half covered so you can be out in the sun or in the shade as you desire. I don't recall if all Caribe deck cabins on the Island fit my description as those on the bump-outs may be different...better check when booking.

Our preference is a cabin from about mid-ship toward the aft end for the smoothest ride. Cabins aft of the aft elevator are very quiet since there is very little hallway traffic.

I did a partial transt a couple of months ago on the Island and had a balcony. I was on Aloha, not Caribe, so it was a smaller balcony but we were able to get a room on the "bump out" which I enjoyed. This is a spot that sticks out a bit so the balconies extend a bit from the others. I can't say that it was better than non bump outs but I can't help but think that I would have felt a bit tucked in if not in the bump out. You should be able to find photos of this on the website loonbeam posted

On the same cruise as Dana and had the Caribe balcony. Yes they were bigger and partially shaded. Some time during the day there was no shade at all due to the position of the sun. Would I pay extra for them again. Not really as it was just the DW and I and did not see a big benefit of them. If We would have had some children along then the extra room would have been handy.

Have a great time on your cruise and also sign up for the ferry through the rest of the canal. It gives a whole other outlook on it and you can get some more questions answered about haw they handle smaller boats. Plus you can reach out and touch the sides of the canal as you sink way down into the locks. Yes it is costly but well worth the experience.
