How do I cope without opening windows?

I know that the windows (portholes) don't open in the cabins and I get very hot at night. I think I read somewhere on this board that someone asked for a fan in their cabin - is that right? If so, what sort of fan was it?

Thanks :)

We too can not tolerate a warm room - unless there is an unexpected problem with a cabin, this shouldn't be a problem. We started out in Cabin 403 on SD I - could not get cool, there was an issue. SD moved us down the hall to 405, where we were very comfortable. While in 403 we obtained a fan - portable, oscillating, 3 speeds - could sit on the floor, chair or table.

Technician was on board working on cabin 403 at the time we moved but couldn't guarantee immediate fix -took all of about 10 minutes to make cabin switch with the help of cabin attendants.

I can't imagine windows being able to open - decks are so close to water, not like one of those big ships. While I would love a balcony, not even sure that would would work below Deck 4. We often felt water while on Deck 3 poolside if wind kicked up while we were sailing.

I agree with FT. The lack of opening windows has never been an issue for us. Opening windows/doors bring their own set of issues. Yes, it is nice to walk out on a balcony but honestly, we sit on pool decks or open decks more than our own balcony when we have one. Also, as we learned on Queen Victoria, as soon as you open the door with the ship moving, the room is instantly filled with very humid air. So far, we never had an issue keeping the room as cold as we wanted on SeaDream.

I also like a very cool room. In the past on SD, we have had trouble getting the room cool enough only on deck two. When on decks three or four we have been able to get it as cool as we like. Until I read FT's posts, I thought the problem was with deck two and had kind of decided to book deck three from now on, unless there was a guarantee fare which was so low in comparison that I just couldn't turn it down.

But the lack of a window opening or a balcony has never been a problem. SD is just different than other cruise lines; we spend all of our time outside. On other cruise lines we would not even consider a non-balcony room and we also spend much more time in the room. On SD it really is only a place to sleep and dress.

I know that this is not a universal feeling. We have all read posts by those who have tried SD once and couldn't get past not having a way to open the room to the fresh air. And then there are all of us devoted Seadreamers who can't wait to come back for more. So all I can suggest to Shaskelly is that they try it once and see how they feel. Ultimately, I guess that is true for every cruise line.

I can tell that FT is having back to work syndrome day. We started in 405 and ended up in 413, which was cold as an icebox and wonderful, but the rest of the story is accurate.

Speaking of ice box cold.... Why is the library always so much colder than the rest of the ship? I like A/C, but it is SO chilly in there that it could almost pass for the Ice Bar that we visited in Norway!!

I bet if the windows opened SD's insurance rates would skyrocket.

LOL! Not to mention you'd have to wear slickers instead of SD pajamas because the cabins on deck 2 would get pretty wet from the incoming spray coming off the boat!

Just joining the happy chorus. We haven't had any problem from the lack of being able to open the windows or the lack of a balcony. The smaller, more intimate nature of SD is such that the entire ship is your balcony. We have never felt over crowded or anything like that at all. We do keep the setting on as low as it goes. Sometimes after boarding the first day it does seem to take a while on SD I but when we were on SD II earlier this month (first time) we noticed how much cooler the room was on SD II. Could just be the particular room and not the ship as a whole. Good point on the library being like the substitute meat locker. We have noticed that. We thought perhaps it was in anticipation of the fun to come later in the evening at the Piano Bar and the Casino!

I also like a very cool room.

And now equal time for Zimmy's DH. She wants to freeze me. If the SD pj's came in flannel with feet, we could both be happy. Marriage is about compromise.
