Showing some pictures from a short trip I had last winter with Hurtigruten's oldest ship, M/s Nordstjernen built in 1956. The ship was taken out of the route in March this year.

My distance this trip was Tromsø - Kirkenes, in the winter-time without sun!

Absolutely beautiful. The "blue light" is breathtaking and I can tell from your pictures that you love this ship.

I have done 2 trips with MS Lofoten (in April 2006 and March 2012, and going back next February!).

A lovely ship. We sailed on her from Kirkenes to Bergen in March, before her last round trip. We did the full round trip on her over Christmas 2009. The twilight hours are really lovely, though it's nice when you get to see the sun again!

We will be back on Nordstjernen in just over a weeks time, to travel around Svalbard and then cruise down the coast to Bergen. Really looking forward to it, though it will be very sad, as this may be her last trip.

Fortunately, we love Lofoten too, and she is still sailing, at least for a while...

I, too, loved all the pictures. I am 75% positive I'm going to book one of the cruises for next March. How is the weather at time of year? And, how much daylight?

Thanks.

You can see the pictures from my last March trip on my blog. It starts here with a train ride from Oslo to Bergen (which I highly recommend) and then click on "message plus recent" at the bottom of the page for the following days.

At this time of year there is about 10 hours of daylight throughout the trip, sun rises at about 8 and sets at about 6/7pm (a bit earlier in the North). So it's a good compromise between enjoying the scenery during the day and hunting the Northern Lights at night.

The weather was OK (it varies pretty quickly so difficult to tell in advance). We had some beautiful sunny days and some that were more windy and rainy (and snowy, even). The temperature was around 0 to 5°C (30 to 40F), a bit more in the South maybe. Bring a good windproof/waterproof jacket and some layers underneath and you should be OK.

It's a really great trip and this winter is the peak of this cycle of solar activity so it's a great year to see the Northern Lights (if the sky is clear, which is always a bet).

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely photos! I agree with the poster who said that they show your love of the ship and the country.

I am booked on the cruise ILoveScotland mentioned and am so looking forward to it. Seeing the Northern Lights has been on my bucket list for a very long time and I can't think of a better way to go after achieving that goal.
