JimnKaren Posted August 30, 2012 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2012 I am aware of (and have used) pharmacies in some of the ports that are considered Caribbean, and that one can purchase some items over the counter that would require a prescription in USA. What can you relate about items like these in French Polynesia? Jim
Tikiintahiti Posted August 30, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2012 Depends on what drug(s) your talking about. Many require a perscription but are far cheaper than state side. I always have our doctor write a big perscription (1 year supply as I go every year) and bring it with me, they always accept it in FP.
JimnKaren Posted August 30, 2012 Author #3 Share Posted August 30, 2012 In the past I have purchased a diuretic, a muscle relaxer and an antibiotic. Nothing fancy or illegal. Karen is a Nurse Practitioner and we take them only as needed. It is just a lot more convenient to do it this way and keep that info off our medical records. A bottle of 100 diuretics will last us at least a year, the muscle relaxer helps me sleep and the antibiotic did come in handy on a cruise when Karen tripped and created a cut in her leg. If they are available over the counter as some things are in Mexico, or Belize or Honduras, then we'll be ready. If they don't do that, then we won't ask. Emdee Posted August 31, 2012 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2012 Interesting, I always thought that medicines were more expensive in FP.
Tikiintahiti Posted August 31, 2012 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2012 usually about 40% less than state side. Subsidized by the French government.
Schplinky Posted August 31, 2012 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2012 In Belize, we bought a package of ambien, which we use for overnight flight sleeping. Does anyone know if a prescription is required for this in Tahiti?

Tikiintahiti Posted September 7, 2012 #8 Share Posted September 7, 2012 Jim, If you have a particular item you want to know about give me an email, be happy to give you the info but just don't want to play 'pharmacist' on an open forum.
