Chester & Brewster Posted September 11, 2012 #26 Share Posted September 11, 2012 What exactly is a "congestion Fee"? and to whom is this fee paid? http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/congestioncharging/default.aspx This link will tell you all you need to know about the congestion charge; it's basically a £10 per day toll for driving in central London. Argos.co.uk has SatNav units starting at around £50 - you might be able to order online & have it delivered to your first night accommodation, if you can find your way there from the airport easily enough... Thank you. We have chosen to return our vehicle early and use public transportation to get to Gatwick airport. We will be staying close to Victoria Stn. Does anyone know what the cost is to take to train to Gatwick? and how far a walk it is? as we will have luggage to worry about.

Wise move - the car will be a hindrance. But it's about a 30 mile walk to Gatwick, will take about 9 hours. Or did I mis-read your question :D Easy-peasey by train direct from Victoria rail station. http://www.gatwickexpress.com/ runs every 15 mins, non-stop, £18.90 But regular local trains also direct from Victoria rail station to Gatwick take just 5 mins longer & cost only £13.50 http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search Station codes are VIC to GTW The station at Gatwick is in the South Terminal. If your flight is from the North Terminal there's a free shuttle tram. All very easy & luggage-friendly. JB :)

Is it also a cost decision to drive all the way from Scotland, or are you visiting places on the way? The Rubens is about 100 yards from Victoria Station, about 2 minutes walk. Have a great time :)

Since there are 6 of you cost wise, you might want to take a car service. I just checked http://www.justairports.com (we have used them 2x) and the cost from the Rubens to Gatwick would be 75GBP for a 8 passenger van. To get a quote, use Rubens postal code SW1. A little over a week to go. Yes, we have a planned route that includes several stops.

anniversay/grad trip Posted September 15, 2012 Author #35 Share Posted September 15, 2012 Thought this might be of interest if you are still thinking about GPS? That was very kind of you, but we leave in 5 days and it would not arrive in time. Where were you a month ago...lol....? I think we will just have to pay retail once we get settled into our hotel. If we are able to locate it (not sure if Dixons is accessable to us at the airport) we will pick one up at the airport. If not, we will be off to Curry's/PC World/or Tesco as soon as we land. Thanks again....
KirkNC Posted September 15, 2012 #36 Share Posted September 15, 2012 We always take a GPS with us to Europe and use it even if we aren't renting a car. If you buy one, be sure it already has European maps, some of the Garmin nuvi come with it pre-loaded and I believe they cost around $175.
