klfrodo Posted October 9, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 9, 2012 In this instance, cash would be the better option. Leave the available credit on your CC for any unforseen emergency. If nothing else, late on the last night you could go to Guest Services and have them close your account and request final bill to be invoiced against you CC. That way, there is only one charge and no potential holds or pendings.
cruzeluver Posted October 9, 2012 #3 Share Posted October 9, 2012 You may use cash to set up your on board account. Depending on the cruise line you sail on, the amount of cash they require at check-in will vary. You can always add more cash to your on board account and at the end of your cruise they will reimburse you any balance still on your account. cb at sea Posted October 9, 2012 #4 Share Posted October 9, 2012 Cash is king.....and every cruiseline allows it!
Rare Hlitner Posted October 9, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 9, 2012 I have a low amount on my credit card. Will cash be ok when we get on the ship? Maybe! It depends on your cruise line and the length of the cruise. For example, Holland America, which is one of the few cruise lines to fully disclose their policy, puts a credit hold on a submitted credit card in the amount of $60 per passenger day (for shorter cruises). Although this is not an actual charge, it ties up that much of your credit balance until the hold is released (this can take several days after your account is closed at the end of the cruise). You have a few options. As has been mentioned, you can use cash to operate your onboard account although they will require a cash deposit when you board (the amount varies depending on cruise line and length of cruise). You then settle your bill at the end of the cruise. If you charge more then your deposit you will be required to increase your cash deposit during the voyage. You other option is to simply call your credit card company (the number is on the back of your card) and explain that you are going on a trip and would like to have your credit amount increased. In many cases, as long as you do not have awful credit, the credit card company will increase your allowable balance (although this can be temporary). Krazy Kruizers Posted October 9, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 9, 2012 Welcome to Cruise Critic. Most cruise lines will put a $60 "hold" per day on your credit card -- if you use one. It won't take affect until you actually check in at the pier. As for spending on the ship -- it is a cashless society -- everything you buy on the ship -- cocktails, speciality restaurants, on board shops -- all get charged to your shipboard account. If you decide to use cash to cover this $60 hold -- you better have enough cash on you when you get on the ship.
