Dudearoo Posted October 18, 2012 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2012 Wondering about cell phone reception in alaska and while cruising the inside passage. We have TracPhone, ATT and Virgin Mobile phones. Any one have experience/knowledge of using these networks? Please advise and thanks.
Rare Keith1010 Posted October 18, 2012 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2012 With ATT we had great service in each of the Alaska Ports. If you are also asking about service on the ship we were able to use the service from the ship (extra cost) but don't do that very often. We have TracPhone, ATT and Virgin Mobile phones. Any one have experience/knowledge of using these networks? Please advise and thanks. Had ATT for my phone as well as my iPad and had no trouble connecting in any of the ports. FYI, if you stop in Vancouver or Victoria, it is international and you get charged international rates unless you have an international option in your cell package. sherryf Posted October 18, 2012 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2012 Another AT&T user here. On previous trips I had a cheap flip phone and had no problems with calls or texts in ports. Now I have an iPhone 4s and used it for voice, texts, data (Facebook, email, etc.) in ports this past July. Data was a little slow in places, but usable. I was able to find free WiFi a couple of times, which really helps. I turn off my phone while on the ship and in Canada (Victoria, Yukon) to avoid extra charges. mytime53 Posted October 18, 2012 #6 Share Posted October 18, 2012 I think TracPhone is what my mom has...it varied greatly on her trip this summer. Worked in some ports some times, but not other times.
Dudearoo Posted October 19, 2012 Author #7 Share Posted October 19, 2012 All, Thank you so much for the responses. I try really hard not to use the phone on vacation, but knowing it will be fine in case of emergency is very comforting. Safe travels to all and best wishes. DizzyDallasDi Posted October 19, 2012 #8 Share Posted October 19, 2012 AT&T gave great reception in all ports....even on top of Mount Roberts in Juneau. I have problems with reception at work and my building is next to the AT&T building....go figure.
