General Max Posted April 8, 2006 #426 Share Posted April 8, 2006 When we visited New York City in February, 2006, we also went to Atlantic City for 3 nights. That is a lot different than commuting into NYC daily as an tourist. Cheers General Max
Vic The Parrot Posted April 9, 2006 #427 Share Posted April 9, 2006 "Who WANTS to stay in New Jersey" Plenty of reasons to plan a few days in our beloved Garden State. (And Atlantic City is a keen diversion .. ) Recently, I had visitors who raved about a nice B+B in Spring Lake, and loved the sound of the surf upon stepping out on the balcony before enjoying a cup of coffee on the hotels ocean-front verandah. True, it adds an extra 40 minutes to the drive into NYC, but well worth it! :)
ejbmorr Posted April 9, 2006 #428 Share Posted April 9, 2006 Thanks to Vic the Parrot for his comments about the beautiful New Jersey shore areas. We have spent entire vacations enjoying the serene, relaxing and the entertaining spots all up and down the Jersey coastline. Only a cruise can compete with all that the Jersey shore towns have to offer, both to families and adults on vacation. What a fun combination a shore/cruise vacation would make for those who have the time!
RevNeal Posted April 9, 2006 #429 Share Posted April 9, 2006 About two years ago I gave a lecture series at St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Ocean City, New Jersey. That's just south of Atlantic City. That's a VERY nice town, and a GREAT beach.
bepsf Posted April 10, 2006 #430 Share Posted April 10, 2006 The Righa looks quite glamourous... I knew I shoulda stayed there - probably wouldn't have tripped over luggage in our tiny room and messed up my knee if we'd been there!
peaches from georgia Posted April 10, 2006 #431 Share Posted April 10, 2006 Of course there are lovely areas in NJ and we have spent a lot of time in the Garden State. My comment was clearly meant in relation to cruise pax on this thread looking for a hotel in which to stay when spending a few days doing the tourist thing and shopping in NYC. I don't think commuting from/to Atlantic City or anywhere along the Jersey shore or in southern NJ every morning and night was what they had in mind, do you? RevNeal Posted April 10, 2006 #432 Share Posted April 10, 2006 Brian, it was a very nice hotel and the rooms were a very nice size indeed. In January 2007 they don't seem to have available rooms, and even if they did I'm sure they would be astronomically expensive. :( Hence, I'm thinking about booking at the Waldorf or the Marriot Marquis for a short pre-Noordam-Cruise stay. Peaches, staying on the Jersey shore is not what I had in mind, either. :) I wanted to stay in Manhattan ... and I did and I totally enjoyed it. I suppose the point that was being made was that IF one wanted to stay on the Jersey side, there are plenty of lovely places to stay. Of that I'm sure. If I remember correctly the General made a contribution to Atlantic City's economy prior to the Maiden Voyage. :D

I know that, too, but the specific post to which I was replying was recommending staying just across the Hudson to take advantage of the lower sales tax, which is not what I thought any of you Noordam pax had in mind. Somehow suceeding posts turned into a defense of the great state of New Jersey by other posters as if I was flaming the entire state. I know NJ well and anyone who does knows NJ needs no defense- it is a lovely state, hence the Garden State.

That's just south of Atlantic City. That's a VERY nice town, and a GREAT beach. If you so not rome around outside a block or two of the boardwalk it is a nice town, otherwise........ AC has a nice beach and I spent many days there on day trips with my daughter long before the casinos. However, there are nicer beaches further south that I also spent a lot of time at. To name a few, Wildwood and Cape May. :) Sorry for getting off topic.
RevNeal Posted April 10, 2006 #435 Share Posted April 10, 2006 If you so not rome around outside a block or two of the boardwalk it is a nice town, otherwise........ I enjoyed the people there. They had a good sense of humor ... meaning that they liked mine. :) And, I enjoyed the beach and the boardwalk. But, I didn't see too much of the town otherwise -- other than to drive through it. I was there for 4 days, and enjoyed it. AC has a nice beach and I spent many days there on day trips with my daughter long before the casinos. However, there are nicer beaches further south that I also spent a lot of time at. To name a few, Wildwood and Cape May. :) Sorry for getting off topic. Thanks for the suggestions. Next time I'm in the area I will have to check them out! I have no idea when that will be, though. My schedule seems to be bracketed around (1) church calendar, (2) Lecture/Teaching/Retreat Leading Opportunities, and (3) CRUISING. :D
bepsf Posted April 10, 2006 #436 Share Posted April 10, 2006 As nice as I imagine NJ to be (aside from the folks who steal luggage off the pier in NYC, but that's another dead horse....) - I agree w/ Peaches: I don't wanna stay there while visiting NYC! Greg-- I was planning to stay at the Maritime in Chelsea - the lobby looks like the Andrea Doria if it were designed by Jonathan Adler... ...and it's in a great neighborhood surrounded by super-cool nightlife. Hiro's - which is downstairs - is the massive Japanese-themed banquet room/nightclub where my NYC undoing was done. ;)

Mrs Max still reminds me about it. Cheers General Max

General Max Posted April 30, 2006 #439 Share Posted April 30, 2006 Brian, your next cruise is coming up fast. Don't forget your gloves for Alaska. By the way, have you been successful with the headhunter? Cheers General Max and Mrs Max
bepsf Posted April 30, 2006 #440 Share Posted April 30, 2006 Oh, Yes - Thanks for asking! I start Monday for ThinkEquity here in SF, in the Pyramid. Filling in for a lady who's baby decided to arrive one month early... ...on the bus Monday am on the way to work! :D I was afraid I'd have to cancel/postpone the trip - but my new boss told me to go and have a great time! ;) I'm looking forward to spending time w/ Scotty again - especially someplace warm!!! Fortunately we have a nice LARGE hotel room (www.hotelcoral.com) , so no more tripping over luggage late at night for me! Send Mrs Peggy our regards,

General Max Posted May 10, 2006 #444 Share Posted May 10, 2006 Hi Vic. I agree. I was going to designate this the HAL unofficial hotel in New York City but 3 nights there is more than a lot of 7 day cruises without food. General Max Posted July 11, 2006 #445 Share Posted July 11, 2006 Vic, have you booked any other cruises yet. We are on the Panama Canal in April 2007 which starts in NYC. Cheers General Max
AlohaPride Posted July 11, 2006 #446 Share Posted July 11, 2006 My DH and I have been advised by our TA to stay at the Hotel Edison. Yes, it's old, but it's very close to where the Noordam docks AND it's right on Times Square (and a block away from Broadway). We are staying there a night before the cruise and the night after the cruise. I've read mixed reviews about this hotel from "it's old and small" to "amazing location, been staying here for years" so I think this is a risk. It could be GREAT and it could be HORRIBLE! Any comments? Brian, I hope this isn't the small hotel where you tripped over your bags :(
hammybee Posted July 11, 2006 #447 Share Posted July 11, 2006 When I was not living in NY or NJ, I was traveling to NY. Several years ago, when there was a shortage of hotel rooms in the city, I got bumped on a guaranteed reservation. This meant that my preferred hotel had given my room to someone else and was now obligated to get me a room at another hotel and transporation to it. I ended up at the Edison. It was bland, tired and the carpets were dirty, around the perimeters. Things may have changed for the better for competitive reasons but I would still opt to stay somewhere else, if possible. If your heart is set on the Times Square area, the Marriott Marquis is always a predictable choice. They have a revolving bar which offers nice views of the area. peaches from georgia Posted July 11, 2006 #448 Share Posted July 11, 2006 I've read mixed reviews about this hotel from "it's old and small" to "amazing location, ( 'Old and small' and 'amazing location' are not mutually exclusive. Many NYC hotels are old with small rooms and clanking radiators. But I've never stayed at the Edison so I am not commenting on that hotel, just in general. It may not be the glamourous NYC hotel you are envisioning, though there are many of those, too.
gizmo Posted July 12, 2006 #449 Share Posted July 12, 2006 Aloha You should take a look at Trip Advisor reviews on this hotel. Some are not so good.
AlohaPride Posted July 12, 2006 #450 Share Posted July 12, 2006 Aloha You should take a look at Trip Advisor reviews on this hotel. Some are not so good. Thats exactly what I was talking about...they are either REALLY good or REALLY bad. I haven't found any reviews on this hotel at Trip Advisor that are middle of the road. I just have to keep reminding myself that it's only a night before and a night after...and we don't plan on being in the room but to sleep (if we do that at all!)
