okbookgirl Posted November 24, 2012 #26 Share Posted November 24, 2012 Did WDW ever charge for wifi???? Its pretty easy for a company on land to offer free wifi..especially if it was never a profitable revenue stream Yes they did, 10 bucks per day, and they weren't serving 2500 guests more like 25,000. It was on land but it was sheer numbers. At the smallest resort there are thousands of rooms, and there are dozens of them. so their volume was astronomical. However they ran some trials last fall and by my last trip in October it was WDW wide free wi fi including in the 4 theme parks, 2 waterparks, three public shopping/entertainment areas and a sports complex. Now I don't think it's feasible today, but I so think the way things are going that more and more resort/vacation destinations will have to offer free wifi to remain competitive. Within the last year I've seen malls, casinos, fast food and sit down restaurants and even dr's offices begin to advertise wifi as a perk of doing business. So I do think eventually cruise ships will have to step up.
geckog Posted November 24, 2012 #27 Share Posted November 24, 2012 Have tried the $99 Internet on the Magic. My only desire now is to find a lucrative job that I can do entirely online. Then, I could live on the ship.
Cruizinman Posted November 24, 2012 #28 Share Posted November 24, 2012 High end hotels have no problem charging obscene amounts for Internet access. Define High end hotels
windandsun Posted February 23, 2013 #29 Share Posted February 23, 2013 I honestly have no need for internet while I am on a vacation. Unless I have children at home (and I don't) or a sick family member, There is no need for me to connect with facebook, email, ect. I am on a vacation. I will catch up with all that when I get home. I own a small, internet based business and it is vital that I have the ability to check on things when I am away .. vacation or not ;)

ibcnusoon Posted April 8, 2013 #31 Share Posted April 8, 2013 I have an online businesss, although it would be nice to get away from "work" monitoring the website and doing simple daily tasks during vacation on a cruise ship is wonderful! Please do not judge because I am very interested in unlimited internet, especially since i paid close to $200 on the Victory for 400 minutes (or something like that, shared with my two DD's interested in Facebook and Instagram). ANyway, would like Carnival to do this ACROSS THE BOARD, was upset when I got on the Victory, thinking I could get the $99 plan. :(
srlafleur Posted April 8, 2013 #32 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Oh, pleease...don't tell my boss or I'll be expected to do w*rk while on vacation!!! Part of what I like cruising for is inaccessibility via cell and internet! ;)
Familyfuncruise ! Posted April 8, 2013 #33 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Has anyone tried using Skype ?? Which package would be better for use with Skype ? I am leaving children at home on our vacation and am looking at ways to communicate with them at home and which ones would be the most affordable, so far the cost of using our cell phones is out the fee is astronomical for one week ! We are from Canada if this has any input into internet use on board. I was thinking of setting up phone times to call the kids a few times durring the week but 20 minutes on the phone over the course of the week will come inline to the internet at 39.99.... Its 1.99 per minute, and I am not even sure if that includes calling to Canada or just calls to the US. Any input is appreciated.
Rare skittl1321 Posted April 8, 2013 #34 Share Posted April 8, 2013 High end hotels have no problem charging obscene amounts for Internet access. This has always baffled me. The more expensive the room, the more likely you pay for internet and breakfast as well. We prefer something like a Hampton Inn to a JW Marriott for this reason. The bed's are just as comfortable. I'm of two minds about this. $100 for a week seems so reasonable I might actually buy internet. I kind of like not being addicted to the internet for a whole week. It_Is_Me Posted April 8, 2013 #35 Share Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) We sailed on Glory last week and bought the high speed internet package. The speed varied. On the last afternoon, I gave up after 15 minutes of trying to do the online check in at Delta.com. I probably could have done it at bedtime, but my DS (different cabin) had used the connection and forgot to logout. They did enforce one device logged in at a time! Familyfuncruise ! Posted April 8, 2013 #37 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Isn't it $1.99 to call from the phone in your room? Yes, per minute .... which would equal 40$ for 20 minutes of call time throughout the week. If I had an unlimited internet connection($40 package) which I could Skype with them for a few minutes each day I likely could get more time to chat with them not leaving me feeling like I rushed them off the phone so as to not accumulate minutes and not know how much each call is costing me till I take a look at my S&S Account. I dont mind paying to communicate with them I just want to find the most affordable and effective method.
readytotravel44 Posted April 8, 2013 #38 Share Posted April 8, 2013 So is there a time line for the rest of the fleet? I am going to be on the Triumph in 89 days and it would be awesome to be able to keep in contact with my family back here without paying an arm and a leg for it. TOTALLY agree! We too, will be on the Legend (EUROPE) this summer. We would purchase it in a flash to keep in touch with work since that will be required while we are gone. I would be a real service for guests on the Europe trips. John will be on the Legend. Hope he speeds this along for that trip.
Familyfuncruise ! Posted April 8, 2013 #39 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Isn't it $1.99 to call from the phone in your room? :) I just reread what I typed and now can see how you had this question. a more clear explanation might help LOL. The internet package being $40 and the call from the room rate of 1.99 per minute could equal out to the same price of $40 for 20 minutes of call time. If we use the internet package = $40 for unlimited internet calls through Skype longer and more frequent I think we would get more "bang" for our buck so to speak and the confidence we don't have to time calls home on the phone to avoid having an astronomical phone bill. It seems as though the unlimited internet might be a better choice if we can use Skype if not I am thinking just calling home once or twice and limiting the time on the phone will be the option we choose. bguppies Posted April 8, 2013 #41 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Just a heads up for those just reading the early parts of this thread up to Nov...about the Dream having unlimited internet. They still had it on our late December cruise, but I have read that the first cruise of the new year that the Dream did away with the Unlimited Internet package and had gone back to paying by the minutes. Just verify before going by old posts about which ships HAD unlimited internet at that time. Bill
pe4all Posted April 8, 2013 #42 Share Posted April 8, 2013 (edited) They discontinued the unlimited internet package they had on Breeze when we sailed during Christmas. Two weeks ago I ended up getting the cheapest package, (45 min for $29, I think it was) and then also called home 2x from the cabin to make sure the house was still standing, as I left DH home alone!! :D Edited April 8, 2013 by pe4all

MicksMom Posted April 9, 2013 #50 Share Posted April 9, 2013 We were on The Magic the last week in March. We had the basic unlimited, believe it wad $56.99. Can't remember the exact price on the "fast" unlimited, I think it was $99 or $129. The basic was fast enough for us. They still had pay by the minute but I don't know how much it was.
