Average spend on alcohol and other drinks on a cruise

Recommended Posts

the RCCL Drink packagae seems so expensive I can't believe that it makes economic sense for most people.

But it is not solely for alcohol, surely you realize that?

It also includes soda, bottled water, specialty coffees... Adding those up it makes a lot of economical sense.

We love to drink Pellegrino over lunch and dinner and it costs well over $5 per bottle. That makes up quite a lot of money over a week.

I don't think most people are doing this to make money on it. My wife and I will probably do this because it gives us the freedom to choose whatever drink we want, when we want, without worrying about the cost. Otherwise she will often get a beer instead of a frozen drink etc. This will also allow her to try other drinks she normally would not get because she has never had them before. For me, I will be getting the beer package. We sit out at the pool all day, so for me it will be very easy to have 6 or 7 beers during the day. We will also have drinks at night and at the casino. I will probably break even. I am okay with that knowing that I do not have to worry about each drink.

Perhaps you are the execption but even at 7 beers a day you will still be near the break even point and if you go on any shore excursions you may not drink as much on the ship. I also don't understand the comment "without worrying about the cost". It's not like the drinks are free. You have already paid nearly as much or more than it would cost if you paid for the drinks individually.

From all recent reports, the RCI package does not include bottled waters and speciality coffees, although it does include fountain soda, but not cans of soda.

I was referring to the Celebrity Premium Package, so thanks for pointing that one out. :)

In that case the Royal package probably also costs less?

I think this is a great question. I think one of the reasons we cruise is because we ARE curious about the world, the people and even bar bills. I don't drink much on a cruise but that's just me - a glass of wine, one DOD to get started :). With the new drink plans, I think it's a good idea to find out how much people spend in order to help decide what one's costs might be. All questions should be welcome. Thanks OP.

I'm not sure of the cost differential betwen Celbrity and RCCL but according to some recent reports: For RCCL everyone in the cabin needs to purchase the package and it cost about $842 for 2 for 7 days including tips. So would it be beneficial to you?

$60 per day?

Let's see, two specialty coffees, 1 in the morning, 1 after dinner, $5.

2 bottles of Pellegrino, 1 for lunch, 1 for dinner, $10.

Two beers over lunch, $12.

Two sodas while by the pool or something similar, $5.

Drink of the day pre-dinner, $8.

Two glasses of wine with dinner, $15.

A brandy with after dinner coffee, $8.

That makes $63. Considering I myself do not drink coffee, beer, soda, drinks of the day or brandy, it wouldn't be beneficial to me.

But I've met couples who drink three buckets of beer just while lounging three hours by the pool and I bet they might find the drink package a good deal.

Let the package be, my good man. Live and let live

You're still not paying attention: Bottled water is not included. Specialty coffee not included. Now do the math and remeber it's everyday.

I have a few questions then:

How much did you spend on your new car? I already have a new car ...... just curious!

How much do you spend per child on Christmas presents? I'm done with all my shopping ...... just curious!

How much did you spend on your wife's engagement ring? Been married 23 years ...... just curious!

First of all ....... I was pretty much just having a little fun. The point of this site (as I see it) is to obtain information / opinions to better prepare for and enjoy a cruise.

For a non-drinker to ask how much drinkers spend is at the very least NOSEY, and in my opinion being nosey is being rude.

Depends on which car you are talking about. Most recent was $20,000.

Haven't finished buying the kids' presents yet.

Spent $700 on the ring. That was a LONG time ago.

It's not nosy or rude. Like I said before, it's called being curious. From the looks of other posters on this thread, I'm not the only one that feels that way. If you don't like the question, just don't answer.

Oh for goodness saaaake.

I'm comparing to the Premium Package Celebrity offers which includes the aforementioned drinks. I happened to mention that in an earlier post.

What on Earth has the Drink Package done to you for you to have to flame me for trying to be helpful to the OP

If drinking alcohol hurts your feelings, why did you click on this thread?

We spent about $800 on our 11-24 LOS cruise. We are in our thirties and have a beer at lunch 4-5 sitting around the pool, pre dinner drink, wine at dinner then a cocktail or two before bed. I would buy the package it would help budgeting and knowing that expense was paid and done would bring piece of mind.

I'll assume it's a language barrier, but please stop confusing people who are talking about the RCCL package with data from Celebrity. It really doesn't help anyone.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize English isn't your first language.

But now you can pat yourself on the back, you've shown me my place and everybody else that you are intellectually superior.

We can all move on.

In my OPINION, even the premium wine packages are nothing to write home about. Perhaps that is why nobody has given you advice on which wines would be worth trying. But, if you are travelling with someone who likes white and you like red, you could order both and have them kept for you to enjoy on several nights.

Woah.... pls chill everybody.

Coming back to my earlier question, I'm keen to get a 5 bottle Platinum package and try the wines.

Any particular recommendations?

I'm always chilled (have to be, live in the North ;)).

The only wine I remember is the sparkling, Korbel. It's alright, but as stated above, nothing special.

Thank you! I was starting to feel like an alcoholic there for a second. I am 27 and my boyfriend 35. That is about what we had on our last Freedom cruise in Oct. I also stuck to beer more often than I would have liked to because it was cheaper. We would definitely purchase the package and it would be nice to be able to budget for it and pay ahead of time.

You're not alone Katie, LOL .. My husband likes top shelf margaritas -- if he has 3, that's $40.00/day with gratuities. When you're on vacation, under the sun and having fun with a group of people, it's easy to consume that many during the course of a day. We like to have wine at dinner so it does add up. We would have purchased it this time if we didn't have two private charters at port and a private party onboard with free alcohol.

We take the Platinum package and because we like white wines, there is a Robert Mondavi Solaire Chardonnay included in that package which we enjoy.
