Aix-en-Provence or St. Tropez?

We are cruising in May and will be arriving in Toulon on a Sunday. Since it's our first port, don't really want to stay on board and Toulon does not sound like it's particularly interesting. Trying to decide between Aix-en-Provence or St. Tropez. Any opinions? I've heard that Aix shuts down on Sundays, but I've also heard that aside from the port, there's not that much to see or do in St. Tropez. Wondering what others experiences have been.

See a couple of posts back. You could do a short trip to Aix (nice walking town) - check out the Market, then head over to Cassis and do the boat ride.

The tourist area of Aix was open on Sunday. The architecture, fountains and squares are always open so the fact that it was Sunday was not a big deal.

We enjoyed Aix. It's small enough to tour in a morning and then hit Marseille later in the afternoon. Two totally different experiences between the 2 cities.

We went to Aix and Cassis...eventough Aix was nice we preferred Cassis!

Thanks for all the great comments about Aix. That seems to win the popularity contest. Anyone been to St. Tropez? Is it worth the drive?

We agree with the Aix recommendations. That is a charming city with enough to satisfy most tourists. St Tropez is a beach resort town and some would say it passed its prime many years ago.

I was wondering this same question and am leaning towards Aix and Cassis now. Does anybody have any recommendations on getting to Cassis on a Sunday?

We're thinking of the same thing - Aix and Cassis. We will also be there on a Sunday - May 12. We've been talking to Catherine at Tour Designer in Provence, but I find the tours are expensive for just 2 of us so we may have to rethink if we can't get a group together.
