Starting our journey back. The train left Middlemarch punctually, about 1pm. I was getting a little sleepy with the food and it being the afternoon. So, I decided to go stand outside to get some fresh air and a better view. Very soon, my boy joined me.

After returning home you can Google, wiki and YouTube : 'Geef mij maar nasi goreng' is the name of an old Dutch song (1979) by Wieteke van Dort. In the lyrics (Dutch) you'll find onde-onde, tahu petis, sambel and krupuk, and many more!

The view was good, albeit noisy. There are a few places to stand outside including the space in-between carriages. On our return journey, our carriage was just behind the engine. Very loud when the engine whistle blows though.

You can see houses behind these big rocks. This was 1:20pm, not long after we left Middlemarch.

We are doing the train trip on our upcoming cruise, arranged the 4 hour one which goes to Pukerangi instead of Middlemarch as it leaves time to visit Lanarch castle in the afternoon.

Is there much between Pukerangi & Middlemarch worth seeing or is the best part between Dunedin & Pukerangi would you say?

Chugging along. I think this is about as close as I could get to being a train driver.

If you look hard enough, you could almost see the Uruk-hai terrorizing the poor villagers.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do the castle.

 

If you have the choice, do the shorter one, i.e. Dunedin to Pukerangi instead of Middlemarch. Not that much after Pukerangi worth seeing. The beautiful gorge is just before Pukerangi.

Nasi Goreng, Bami Goreng, great stuff. I remember a casual place in Singapore, on high ground, great view, outdoor seating, where we walked up and had brunch - nasi goreng & a Tiger brew ! Even saw same place in a movie years later:)

Great! Since Tiger Beer was mentioned, here is a festive picture of that beer.

 

To our foreign friends, do give Tiger a try when you're in Singapore. If you are flying into Singapore Changi, pick some up at Duty Free Singapore just after immigration!

On the way back, the train did a quick 5 minute stop in the Gorge. Great place to take pictures on a sunny day. This was 2pm.

There are a number of old (> 100 years) bridges along the way, still standing strong.

Another bridge. I can’t imagine building these bridges, more than 100 years ago. Wow. My boy was absolutely thrilled riding the train over so many bridges.

 

Caution! Keep your hands in the carriage. The train passes very close to the rocks at some places, especially in the tunnels. Watch your kids!

Alright, enough pictures of the scenic train ride. We arrived back at Dunedin at about 3:40pm, 10 minutes later than scheduled time.

 

We got on the bus and did a whirlwind city tour. This was taken from some hill, overlooking Dunedin.

Did a brief stop at the world's steepest street, as recorded in the official Guiness Book of Records.

After the whirlwind tour, we got back to our ship at about 5pm. All aboard time was 5pm! The ship sailed off on time at 5:30pm. Taken from our balcony, you can see a bit of Port Chalmers on the left.
