In Toronto Posted January 8, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 8, 2013 Noticed that the Bon Voyage wines are very reasonable - $24.95 including 15% gratuity. Two questions: Are they drinkable? We are not "wine snobs" at all. Can they be taken into the restaurants or bars or are they for cabin consumption only? Thanks. Ellen BTW: Can you buy the Canaletto wines in the MDR/bars or only in Canaletto Restaurant?
CowPrincess Posted January 8, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 8, 2013 We are not wine snobs either. We think that the "bon voyage" red wines we've gotten on HAL are overpriced by about $20 :) We took one bottle to the MDR one night on one cruise. (It was definitely superior to the Mexican wine we'd had the previous night ;) )

You will not be charged a corkage fee to drink it anywhere on the ship you wish.
garydm Posted January 8, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 8, 2013 The wines vary but typically the bon voyage white is drinkable if you get it cold enough. Our experience with the reds was not good. HAL wines are by and large unimpressive and overpriced. We generally bring our own and pick up bottles when in port and pay the corking fee. sail7seas Posted January 8, 2013 #5 Share Posted January 8, 2013 We find the more costly the wine, the less the mark up. We don't drink really high, high category wines but we drink the higher mid range and don't feel the pricing is that out of line with what we pay for similar wines at land restaurants. Yes, they certainly are higher than what we pay in a liquor store but that is not a fair comparison IMO

Krazy Kruizers Posted January 9, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 9, 2013 We do not care for the "House" wines or sparking wines -- they are bitter. Why not wait until you are on the ship and check out the Navigator package?
Typhoon1 Posted January 9, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 9, 2013 I would agree with KK and recommend the Navigator package. The Bon Voyage wines were nothing special.
innlady1 Posted January 9, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 9, 2013 I prefer to choose my own at Total Wine from the wines that I like and pay the $18 corkage fee. That works for me. I don't think I'm a "wine snob" but I do have preferences.
