This is a great informative site. My question is this-I know you can bring wine, water etc. on board but can you also bring beer-My last cruise was on the Veendam in alaska and I brought a case of Bud Light on board with no problem(10 yrs ago). Cabin steward even iced it down for us ! Is this still permissible-thanks.

ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES BROUGHT ON BOARD

Except for wine and champagne, alcoholic beverages

purchased in the ship’s stores or otherwise brought on the

ship cannot be consumed on the ship. Bottles and other

containers will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to

your stateroom on the last day of the voyage. The ship’s stores

sell liquor for take-home only at reduced tax-free prices.

These purchases will be delivered to your stateroom on the

last day of the voyage. A corkage fee of US$18.00 (subject

to change) applies to wine and champagne brought to the

restaurants or bars for consumption. In-Room Dining offers

reduced-price stateroom beverage packages for in-stateroom

consumption of alcoholic beverages. (A 15% Service Charge

on all beverage items and packages with beverages will be

added.)

To my knowledge it has never been permissible, although the policy is not enforced at the gangway sometimes. The steward may not have known it was not purchased on board, and in any case it is not his job to enforce that policy.

I am new to HAL and was under the impression no alcohol was allowed to be brought on board, but then read about the wine. My question is, is the $18 cork fee only if you bring the wine to the restaurant? Can you bring as much wine as you want without fee for consumption in the room only? Has anyone done this?

Yes you may bring on as much wine as you like for consumption in your cabin. You can take a bottle of your own wine to the MDR and pay an $18 corkage fee.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

You can buy bottles and cans of beer online through HAL's site. Indicate that you want it delivered "At Sea" to avoid Florida taxes if you are sailing from a port there.

You can buy beer through Ship Services at 1-800-541-1576.

You can also buy beer once on the ship through Room Service.

There are even deals on some buckets of beer.

The $18 corkage applies in any public area, not just the dining venues.

Technically not correct. ;) Corkage is charged when consuming your own wine in a dining area, bar or lounge. For example: if you take it to the pool deck (public) you will be asked to take it back to your cabin.

Sounds like you lucked out. I wouldn't count on the same thing happening these days.
