What's the deal with the "Paid in Full Date"?

I don't understand this "Paid in Full" date ...

 

When I bought my tickets on the phone with Carnival, they charged my credit card the whole cruise fare, government taxes/fees, prepaid gratuity and Vacation Protection (everything)

 

Are some people just paying a certain percentage at first, and then paying the rest later on?

Depending upon when you book, you can put down a deposit to hold your cabin and guarantee your fare ($250/pp for a seven day cruise), and then make payments up until the "paid in full date".

 

If you book after the PIF date, you must pay the entire fare up front.

It depends on when you book...payment is due in full 90 days before you cruise. so if you book more than 90 days out you can pay the deposite and pay the rest off by the payoff date. if its less than 90 then you have to pay in full at the time of booking.

I thought PIF was 75 days before sailing? Mine was for my March 31st sailing anyways. PIF was sometime in mid January.

Some people book their cruises a year or more ahead of time. They pay the deposit and then when the cruise gets closer, they pay off the balance a little at a time. Or, they wait until the final payment date to pay in full. If you book beyond the final payment date, then you must pay in full at that time.

I am sailing May 11 and my PIF date is February 25. So looks like 75 days before your sail.

Ok ... I bought our tickets about 3 weeks before the cruise, so that explains why I paid everything up front.
