Questions about the Sun

Haven't cruised Princess in a long time - since before PC - chose NOT to on this cruise because were told Sun is an older ship and doesn't have the many choices of restaurants for PC that the newer ships do - you basically would just be "choosing" what time, not which restaurant...we're wondering if this is the best choice for us, we don't mind eating at the same time each night. Do plan on trying the specialty restaurant.

Also, we booked the least expensive balcony and were asked if we "wanted to be eligible for an upgrade"...sounded good so we said "yes"...but has anyone ever gotten a WORSE cabin than the one they originally chose?

From what you said, it sounds as if you made the better choice for yourselves for dining. Traditional will be pretty much the same as what you remember from your first cruise, and you will have the same tablemates each night.

Yes, some folks state "no upgrade" on their booking. They specifically chose their cabin for certain things they wanted and don't want to go to another location more foward/aft or nearer/further form the stairs or showroom or whatever. It depends on what cabin you are assigned now, and whether you have any preferences that might not be met by a higher category in a different location. You will not be downgraded to a lesser category. FYI, this "eligible for an upgrade" statement is somewhat similar to the Publishers Clearing House sending you mail with "you may already be a winner" emblazoned across the envelope. It could happen, but don't bet the farm on it.

Actually, none of the Princess ships have "many" choices for Anytime (also called PC). The ships that have PC really only give you a choice of fixed or walk-up seating, otherwise you are served from the same menu and have the same evening dress. Sun Princess has one for-fee alternative dining option (Sterling), the usual buffet, and a no-charge casual Italian trattoria that serves pizza.

We were on 4 B2B's on the Sun in May. PC dining was our choice. You are correct that it is pretty much the same as traditional dining; however, you do have the choice of times. We elected to have a standing reservation at 6:20pm and had good waiters and a great table with window. The window made it nice for viewing whales and dolphins during dinner.

On the Sun they also have a great, sit down style Pizzaria that serves much more than Pizza in the evening. Lots of choices with great food and service, we have never found them to be on the busy side. It is a great alternative when you just don't fell like going to the dining room. They even serve dessert, so it is a great 'no fee' alternate choice.

They have the Sterling steakhouse and it is the Horizon court made into a special area each night. The atmosphere is not there as they dont block the Horizon court other areas off and so they are right next to you at times. The meal is excellent. we had filet mginon and it was wonderful. Service was also great. They must work on the distractions and the ambiance, there is none now.

They do have the pizzeria and we ate there one night, husbnad had ravioli and I had a pizza(small)...they had wonderful tiramasui..

Just back from Sun and booked for Hawaii November 22, 2005
