what time slot to reserve to Vatican tickets if ship docks at 8am?

I am looking at trying to reserve skip-the-line Vatican tickets.

Our ship will dock on a wednesday (not sure if this makes a difference) at 8am.

 

what is a reasonable time to aim for to reserve skip line tickets if we try to make it into Rome ourselves via train? I understand it takes some time for ship to clear, to get into the port, to get to train station, to get to Rome, to get to the Vatican and so on.... but not sure how it all comes together for the best time slot to pick.

 

Is it better to go with a ship tour in this case? Or some other options?

If you take the train from Civi to San Pietro, you should easily make it to the museum by 11:00 am (probably before, but I would allow myself a little wiggle room). You have to factor in the walk to the train station from port & the walk to the museum from San Pietro. 10:30 am should probably be fine.

Oops ... my previous post was a little confusing as I listed 2 different times. I meant 10:30 am, not 11:00 am. :rolleyes:

Not sure what time of the year you are going but last May we showed up at the Vatican entrance (without reservations) around 1:30 and pranced right in. No line at all.

We elected to go after lunch at 1:00, went to Castlo St Angela first and grabbed a quick bite to eat in between. Our return train was at 4:30 so we had around 2:30 in the museum.
