Usually it´s you pay for it, you get the Points, it´s compimentary, no Points.

As always there can be some inconsistency to this.

Agree with paulxyz2004 in that my understanding is that if the upgrade is free from RCI and changes you from a non-suite to a suite you do not receive the suite related points. You are awarded the points from the category you paid for. The additional points would only be awarded if there was an increased payment included with the upgrade. Either way you do receive whatever other benefits or perks are associated with the stateroom you are upgraded to.

Had an upgrade to a JS from a Balc room last minute - did not get extra points.

But, the concierge did invite us to use the lounge - usually only for larger suites

Got a PAID upgrade this last January from balcony to GS and did not automatically get it - but after lots do frustration, phone calls and emails, we were able to get the double points (paid more than JS price in the end)! Be persistent if that is the case!
