Concierge on the Star

On my cruise on the Star (Aft Penthouse) we never were able to catch the concierge in the Star Bar nor for much of the cruise. We weren't demanding just wanted some specialty restaurant reservations.

So inattentive to us we gave her tip to the Butler.

In mid-February the concierge was David Contreras. Very personable and engaging. Found him or his assistant in Star Bar during breakfast. He was very helpful. Met him in Italian restaurant on shore days for expedited departure from ship. In Belize, he was ashore in afternoon to make sure everyone got priority shuttle. He also recommended and made a couple of shore excursions.

Without asking, he offered to arrange Saturday afternoon bridge tour. He also had us wait to debark until 10:00 a.m. so we could get a tour of the

Garden Villas.

We had David on the Star in March and there was a lady too - the one (and only) thing we asked him for - a change in reservation times at Teppanyaki - he flat out told us they were full - which wasn't what the tv screens were showing - this was after breakfast - went down to deck 7 at 8 am when the specialty dining desk opened and they changed us to another time in about 30 seconds. Needless to say, I wasn't too happy that he didn't even look.

It was spring break and they said the boat was full - so maybe he just assumed there were no reservations available.

Our steward and butler were awesome and we loved Rey "of sunshine" at Cagney's.

I forgot to say they have a mobile phone on them so whether you happen to have your own mobile phone in your room (not all do) or you use a phone around the ship, that is probably the easiest way to get in touch.

1) Is there a concierge exclusively for suite guests on the Star?

2) If there is where is their desk/office located?

I had Patrick,he was always in the Star bar in the mornings.Like Dexdd said, call his mobile phone. His number will be provided in your room in a "Welcome" letter.

On Jewel class ships, their office is located behind the Front Desk. I presume it is in the same location on the Star. You can easily ask the front desk staff and they can point you to the proper location. Usually the Concierge assistant spends a great deal of time there and the Concierge spends much of their time out and about.

If you need to contact them, there should be contact info (phone number) to reach them in your cabin.

If you experience problems in reaching them, contact the Hotel Director for assistance.

We sailed on the Star in Aft Penthouse Suite 9252 on the September 30th sailing and had the exact same experience with the concierge.

We are booked in aft penthouse for upcoming cruise (Jewell ) I was concerned that the aft suites get forgotten about since most suites are forward or close to forward. Jewel only has 12 aft suites on three different decks. That is rough for a butler I am sure.

We had Patrick on star and he was often in the little lobby outside cagney's

With 62 suites and platinum passengers to take care of, the concierge job on the Star is not an easy one, especially if you get some really high maintenance cruisers in the garden villa.

Since the cruisers in the garden villa have paid a pretty hefty sum for their cruise, many of them think the concierge is their personal assistant.

This happened on our cruise with David, who has a lot more patience than I would have with some of the high maintenance cruisers we had on our cruise.

I couldn't believe how some cruisers were wanting a personal escort to the restaurants and the theater.

David, being a native of Honduras, was nice enough to arrange for a taxi and a guide to take us around and show us some available places to rent next winter.

He wanted to find out what we thought so he invited us to dinner. He had six calls, just while he was eating his salad. Just as the main course arrived, he was called away for an emergency meeting, and by the time he came back, it was time for him to join in the White Hot party celebration in the atrium.

We found it was just as easy to make a restaurant reservation by asking the maitre' d in Cagney's every morning. We never had a problem getting the restaurant and time we wanted.

With the amount of passengers the concierge has to take care of on the Star, I think there should be two concierges, one for the suite passengers and the other for platinum members.

The reason for the question was that my only previous suite experience was on the Epic and they had a dedicated concierge located right there in the Haven. The concierge desk was manned from early morning to late evening which ment you did not need to go in search of or to telephone them to get their assistance. That was a real benefit for suite guests.

I have seen butlers and concierges take a lot of grief on CC. It is nice to see someone stick up for them. I for one am a real fan of David. As I've said before, he was extremely attentive to our needs and handled everything we asked for and in some cases some we didn't request.

I think a lot of the problem goes back to the word "assume". There are people who assume they will automatically do everything. And then there are those who don't know what to ask for, so they never engage or call.

My suggestion is to make a point of introducing yourself. Get to know them. You don't have to become the proverbial squeeky wheel, but it might help if they can put a face and name together.

on a personal basis
