Guarantee more than selecting a room?

Sorry for multiple posts so close together- I am *this close* to booking a room on the Jewel.

 

The OC is $579 deck 5. The OA is $599 and says deck 8. However, when I click on OA it comes up as a guarantee (does not guarantee a deck, despite it being listed as deck 8?)

 

Is it unusual that the guarantee price is higher? Am I missing something?

 

Also, the OA is advertised as a "Oceanview picture window". Am I right in thinking that this absolutely will not be a porthole or an obstructed view?

 

I've had an awful year, so I'm thinking I should just pick my room and pay the lower price- but it seems like a higher deck and the possibility of an upgrade could be nice. It just seems so odd to have a higher price for GTY. And I will not be happy with a non-picture window or an obstructed view.

the OA GTY is a higher category than the OC, so the price is higher. If the only OAs they have are GTY, at this point I believe that all the OAs are booked. If they continue to be booked, you will likely get upgraded to the lowest balcony category. However, they may offer someone who is now booked in an OA the chance to upgrade for a price and if taken, their OA becomes available to assign to you or someone else.

 

Often a GTY for a specific category is only a few dollars less than a specified cabin...typically not a big save.

I'm thinking I need to wait until tomorrow and call the cruise consultant at NCL. It's too confusing to do online... All the OB/OC rooms are under the casino or main dining rooms, and that worries me. But I don't want to book the OA GTY and just end up there anyway.

if you book an OA gty, you will be assigned an OA or higher. therefore, you will not get an OB or an OC or an obstructed cabin.

 

If you go with the OA gty, I think you might get an O1 or an OA...or there is always a chance you could be placed in a balcony (do not get your hopes up). Take a look at the OA and O1 cabins; if you can accept any of those, go ahead with the Gty.

 

edit: what date are you considering? The rest of us can glance at availability and say what we'd do.

Hmm, the O1 seems like a bit of a downgrade. They all seem to be connecting rooms on a lower deck- so noisy through the connecting wall, and the possibility of being under the casino. Might as well just go with the lower category I think.

I can understand that You might not find the O1 appealing, though families desiring connecting rooms might. That is the rub...NCL gets to decide the cabin rankings, so they define upgrade and downgrade. Please verify, but I think O1 is considered an upgrade vs OA...if so you could get an O1 if you booked an OA gty.

Oh, sorry I was using downgrade as my own point if view. You are right NCL classifies it higher- a good reason for me not to book the gty. I really appreciate you pointing that category out. I wouldn't have known this!

 

So I'm going to go with a room under the dining room. I think this would be a little quieter than under casino.

There is another thread on this board where the lady (a solo traveler) booked a guarantee thinking she would get a Deck 8...think obstructed but was given a porthole on Deck 4, which is considered an upgrade. She wasn't happy but has since decided to enjoy herself nevertheless.

I ended up booking an OB, not a guarantee OA. The cruise consultant I talked to told me booking the GTY OA could put me in ANY picture window oceanview- including the OB/OC categories (plus the O1, which NCL thinks is an upgrade, but isn't if you don't have kids). Decided it wasn't worth paying for an OA if I could end up in an OC anyway!

 

We are happily on Deck 5, hopefully in a quiet spot. Still find it VERY weird a GTY costs more than selecting your cabin, but we selected ours and it's all good!

Yeah - I saw that. That was one of the reasons I knew the deck wasn't guaranteed, even though it says Deck 8 on the NCL website (but also says Deck not guaranteed)

I think you made the right choice as you would not have been pleased if you had been "upgraded" to an O1. I disagree with the Consultant's statement that you could book an OA gty and be assigned a lower category, such as an OC. Of course, if you booked an OX gty, you could indeed get any OV cabin; maybe that confused the consultant. believe me, some consultants have knowledge deficits...fortunately, I do not;). anyway, you learned a bit about the perils of gty bookings without getting stuck in a cabin you do not like. have a wonderful cruise.
