My husband enjoys photographing lighthouses. Are there any special ones to see on the Baltic itin's?

I also love to photograph lighthouses, but alas, I didn't see a one in the Baltics.

Cheers

Hi, I too love lighthouses.

If your itinerary takes in Warnemünde in Germany you are in luck. There are good views of the lighthouse from the approach channel and, as it is situated on the main promenade, it is accessible from the land. It is open to the public, the views from the top are great. If you are visiting Kiel there is a nice one there too, not so easily accessible but easy see on the staboard side as your ship sails up the fjord. There is also a smaller but interesting light in the middle of the channel.

For really good info and pictures

Google - Lighthouse Warnemünde or Lighthouse Kiel Holtenau.

There is a map showing Baltic Lighthouses at

http://www.cmm.pl/balticlights/Historic&Modern.html

and some nice images at

I also Googled 'lighthouses of the Baltic' and found more info. Most sites deal with the lighthouses in just one country but used with the map above you could find which are on your itinerary.

Happy cruising (and Lighthouse hunting) :D

If you are on a regular cruise most of the ones in the Sthlm area

are too far away from the cruise ship route/central Stockholm.

Anyway list of lighthouses:

Agree with Len. Don't recall any such lighthouses during our Baltics sailing. Our cruise didn't visit Warnemünde/Berlin. We did see the below cute structure in the Oslo harbor. Not exactly a lighthouse, but cute and interesting. In its days, it probably served some sort of function to serve ships getting safely into the harbor.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Sailing out from Oslo with the red brick City Hall in the background and the surrounding areas and “hills” showing around this so-called “fjord”.:

Here is a closer look at that unique and cute Oslo harbor island with its special structure. Doesn't look exactly like a lighthouse, but it is very interesting!!:

A list of all Danish lighthouses can be found here, http://www.fyrtaarne.dk/. the site has a small interactive map helping you find the lighthouse - and a picture. Many of them are vey small and do not look like traditional lighthouses, others are quite special, e.g. small wooden houses or located inside villas, but there are of course traditional lighthouses as well.

On the approach to Helsinki you will see the Harmajan majakka lighthouse, and the church spire of Suomenlinna church, which serves also as a full listed lighthouse. The two form a line of position guide together.

I was just looking up info on Kronstadt as a result of this post

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1846119

and it looks like there is an interesting lighthouse there:

This very tall (177 feet) lighthouse built in the early 1920s is active. It is an octagonal unpainted concrete tower with a red lantern and gallery. It is located near the east end of the naval harbor at Kronstadt.

I'm a lighthouse lover, too, and saw quite a few on our Baltic trip last year. If you're going to St. Petersburg, there is a really interesting place a little ways out of the port (maybe an hour) where you see an old fort with several old lighthouses. You have to be on the correct side of the ship, however.

There are a number of little lighthouses and aids to navigation when going into a number of ports, but they're not the most fantastic lighthouses in the world!

If you have some time, check out my photos under the two Baltic galleries here: http://www.pbase.com/roothy123

I ended up seeing more lighthouses than I expected! We were in Copenhagen, Riga, Tallinn, SP, Visby, Ronne, Warnemunde, Helsinki, Gdansk/Gdynia, and ended up in Stockhom, though we didn't have anything but an hour there!

There is also a site called marinas.com that is very helpful. You can select the "Lighthouses" category and each country or port you'll be visiting to get information, including specific GPS locations. Since many cruise ships have a TV channel in the cabins that show exactly where the ship is, you can get an idea of how close or far to a lighthouse you are.

You probably have gone on your cruise already but for others who might have an interest in it, here is a listing at the website belonging to the University of North Carolina.

This is the lighthouse on the Shetland Island , perched on the Eshaness cliffs ( not exactly Baltics , but may be on some itineraries)

Love this picture, and loved my visit to the Shetland Islands last year (and yes, I saw that lighthouse!)

I know the original poster is not going to the UK, but apparently there are at least several lighthouses lovers following this post. SO - just wanted to add that our cruise in the Baltic region was absolutely fabulous and I did see some lighthouses. However, our trip to the UK and Norway was especially rewarding for lighthouse photography. There were lighthouses popping up out in the water quite often in that area (mostly UK) and some on land, too.

Giantfan, we just booked a cruise to coastal Spain and a visit to Lisbon, Canary Islands, and Madeira. Have you been there? Have any photos I could look at??
