Taking our first and probably only Alaska cruise.

We want to take in as much scenery as possible.

Can't really afford a corner suite.

Opinions please.

Starboard side verandah or aft?

Had an aft corner suite in the Caribbean and loved being aft. But have loved being on the side as well.

The side really doesn't matter . Scenery in Alaska is beautiful on both sides. When you are near a glacier the captain will usually slow rotate so that all balconies get a good view.

We did have an aft corner and if I had choose, I would say aft. It was very cold, especially in Glacier Bay. We spent the majority of our time on the back where we were protected from the wind. When we stepped out onto the side balcony, we were blasted with ice cold wind. Even though we had some beautiful sunny weather, even in Glacier Bay, I don't think we would have spent much time on the balcony at all if we'd only had the side. Also, from the back, you can see both shores. If you're on the side, you only see one.

I would probably take the aft.

I do want to mention that by far the best views will come from the open deck of the ship where you can easily move around from side to side to take in all of the beauty that awaits you.

The majority of HAL captains keep the port side of the ship facing the glaciers the longest.

Also -- again most captains have the port side face the towns.

Since this may be your only Alaskan cruise, you will want to be out on the decks for glacier viewing.

JMO -- I don't like viewing where I have been -- thus we always get a port side verandah.
