Worst port ever visited.

Caracas

Everywhere we went we had militia men guarding us and after our tour around the city, etc., we were restricted to a certain few stares where the guards had their M 16's and M 4's. And in spite of all that "protection" a couple of people still had their wallets stolen.

Cartagena, Colombia

It was just awful. The weather was horrible, the attitudes of the people was very sour, the tour guides were greedy and unwilling to help when we were all totally soaked through and through, the traffic was horrible and the streets were so flooded it was like trying to drive through the canals of Venice, the extreme poverty was both an eye opener and shocking in how pushy they were in demanding money.

Have also been to Cartegena - don't like that port eitgher.

But the poverty there isn't as bad as in Caracas.

On one of our tours in Cartegena, out bus driver up and quit in the middle of the tour. We were on a Princess cruise and they were aware of problems like this - so there was always an extra empty bus at each one of stops to take over whenver a driver decided to quit.

At least in Cartegena we didn't have guards everywhere.

Martinique. We arrived on Sunday. The entire island is closed on Sunday. There were only one or two people even on the street to stare at our tour bus wondering what the crazy Americans were trying to do. We did zip around looking at the outsides of all the buildings we couldn't get inside of.

Fortunately, and with much hinting that large tips would be appropriate, an outdoor privy was found that the bus driver could have unlocked!

Port au Prince, Haiti

About 25 years ago, NCL used to travel to that port on 7 day cruises. It was so bad with beggars, etc., that DH & I took two steps off the ship, turned around, and got right back on.

One of my favorite mystery authors LOVES it and went there after his house got damaged last year during Charlie to finish his current books. His name is Randy Wayne White (below on the QM II which he lectured) ...His web site is http://rwwhite.com/ and his Doc Ford novels are very good.

Thank you for sharing this... I'm going to give his series a try. :)

Miami has to be the worst port I have visited.

Dirty, dangerous.

Military and police everywhere - all carrying guns.

Very rude locals. Many do not speak English.

Taxis dirty and falliing apart.

Taxi drivers who don't speak English or know where anything is.

The sound of gunfire here and there.

Airport very disorganized.

Port area very disorganized

San Blas Islands

Crowded warrens of little grass huts, some with TV antennas sticking out of the roof. People in costumes with huge wads of US currency. Animals dressed in children's clothing that you could take pictures of, for a small fee. And hot and humid to boot.

We were soooo very happy to get back on board.

JamaicaSomeone else mentioned Santa Tomas Guatamala. Actually we had one of the best tours there. But I agree about the military with the mirror sun glasses, spit shined riding boots and a cannon on their belts. --- Like Jamaica, Guatamala has severe poverty and is a banana republic.
