Olympia OR Delos for a excursion?

Should we visit Olympia OR Delos? Why?

We want to see ruins but must pace ourselves.

Previously, we walked Katakolon and Mykonos for a relaxing day.

Both sites are well worth seeing (if time and money permit). However, there are alot more ruins to see on the island of Delos. Personally, I was much more impressed with Delos.

I think it comes down to a personal preference. Neither site has the impact of an Ephesus or Pompeii, but both have their own charm and atmosphere.

 

If you are interested more in Greek history (and the history of the Olympic games -- the ancient ones, not the modern ones), then go to Olympia. And if you go, don't miss the terrific small museum on the site.

 

Delos, while it started out as a religious center in the Greek world, has more ruins from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, including some remains of houses with mosaics, a theatre, and lots of remains of monuments. Again, they have a nice little museum on site.

 

Olympia is more shady; Delos is mostly rock and little shade, at least in the areas you'd be walking.

Both are great and you can do both on your own at your own pace.

I would recommend both. There is a lot of info on this board on how to go to either one. And I agree with cruisemom - don't miss the small museums at both sites.
