Sura Fiji Any Feedback

We are looking at the Marina cruise that travels March 11th 2014 from Auckland to Papette. There is an overnight in Sura Fiji and we are finding very mixed reviews on this port and how to spend two days. we like to be active in port and have never cruised the South Pacific. Some feedback would be appreciated to help us decide on this particular cruise as well as how to occupy ourselves with two days at this port.

Thanks

Suva is the best place to land and then leave. Lonely Planet says it well:

"If you've only come to Fiji for the islands and beaches then you best join the people on package tours and avoid Suva (pronounced soo-va) altogether. Nestled into a yawning harbour, this city is sticky with sweat and industry but it's Fiji's most concentrated confluence of ethnicities and cultures. Swimming in the urban milieu you'll discover the influence of every island and background.

Each time worse than the last...its a dirty and somewhat dangerous port. No charm and "a lot of interesting" people...and not in a good way

Get out of town or stay on the ship Is what I would do the Nandi /Lutoka side is totaly different:rolleyes:

Yes typo. We meant Suva. What did you do there

We actually rented a taxi for a four hour tour and went out to the countryside. The lady driver showed us some lovely waterfalls, countryside, took us to a girls school, and then at the end gave us a tour of the main buildings in Suva. I think the tour was 4 hours and outside of Suva was lovely, but Suva itself, no way. I think it cost us $50 for the two of us. Not really all that much to do in Suva. Lautoka was much nicer. You will enjoy the other ports more as they are more scenic.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. We are still vacillating between Auckland to Papeete Marvels of the South Pacific and Papeete to Papeete on Tahitian Pearls trip. Having never been in that area your comments are appreciated

Having sailed trans-pac east to west and west to east, I would suggest actualy Sydney to Tahiti. Tahiti while nice is a compact little group that you can see the next days island but a few miles away.... each island sort of a cookycutter of the last... after 2 they start to blurr into one.

Much more variety in the Transpacific

Actualy The best idea would be to fly to tahiti and take the extension on to Lima.

In Suva this past Nov. we did an excursion with jewels of Fiji to a village by flatboat, lunch, waterfall swim. very interesting and fun. time enough afterward for the HUGE farmer market just outside the port gates

steer clear of the farmers market... when the ship is in port a lot of bad actors come there to pick off visitors. The operate in groups. We were stalked by several groups and it was not fun.....

Get out of Suva...or stay on the ship
