credit cards in Canada

Recommended Posts

As of today, the Canadian dollar is worth 5% or so more than the US dollar so th merchant may offer you 10% (1 usd = 90¢ cad.

I think you have got that backwards

1 USD = 1.05 CAD

1 CAD = .95 USD

You're right...misread the chart so I suppose what that means is that if you try to use US money at those merchants who take it, they will take it at par.

Recently returned on the Glory; everyone took US Dollars; however not tall gave back change in US. Most merchants tried; however they did not always have the right amount of US change. I didn't mind accumluating Canadian money in the first port; however by the second, I was looking to get rid of it and starting using my credit card. In hindsight if I had smaller bills (less than $10); I wouldn't have had the problem of getting too much Canadian back. The Casino would have been a good place to break down bills.

Hi....here's my question and is something I just don't get in this day and age. Why would you spend cash in the first place? One of the great things about credit cards in this day and age is to take all the worries about working with foreign currencies and running out and havin to keep running to an ATM a thing of the past.

I can't conceive, sorry if this rankles anybody, of travelling and paying cash for ANYTHING no matter how large or how small. I just got back from several days in London...upon arrival I pulled £10 out of an ATM, tucked the £10 bank note in my wallet and it's still there. Not once did I pay cash for ANYTHING.

A visit to a cruise port is no different except you don't overnight in port. I can't comprehend that there is any place that won't take credit cards for any kind of purchase. Now perhaps if you buy something for 84¢ you might feel strange using a credit card (I don't). I also understand there are some countries where the use of credit cards is not as widespread as in the USA. Holland and Germany come to mind. Canada as far as credit card usage is concdered (and most other things as much as it might annoy Canadians for me to say this) is amost identical to the USA in most things (other than using the proper systems of measurement and temperature of course). Credit cards are a way of life there too. Why bother with cash?

Due to bad weather we missed 2 ports on our Emerald Princess TA last fall, and they were able to substitute two Canadian ports. Both accepted $US, but all change was in Canadian currency. We only bought inexpensive souvenirs, and many of the little shops had limits for charges so we had to use cash. Otherwise we charge as much as possible.
