August 9th - Med/Sunshine Review

I hope to start adding pictures, mainly of the excursions, late tonight.

Details:

9-day Med Cruise Itn: Barcelona; Marseilles; Monaco; Livorno (Florence/Pisa); Civitavecchia (Rome); Naples; Messina (Sicily); Sea Day; Palma De Mallorca: Barcelona

Party of 7: Grandma, Grandpa, my wife, 3 girls (15, 13, 11) and myself

Rooms (3): 6335 (Reg Balc); 6377 (Ext. Aft Balc) & 6373 (Aft. Wrap Balc)

Started with bookend days of 1 prior and 1 after the cruise in Barcelona. It was time well spent

Quite a few pictures with brief details will follow. This isn’t the typical layout for a review but I don’t have the time to do day-by-day (or the memory J). I have about 2400 pictures a lot of which aren’t good. A few are decent and a few are good. I’ll post some of the better (for a non-photog guy) ones. I have a nice lens (which helps a bunch) but I just point and shoot and whatever I get I get. But be thankful it’s not my wife or you’d get all cut off head shots - LOL, but true.

Needs Improvement (start with this first):

FTTF – We had all 3 rooms booked/paid for FTTF, Carnival only had 2 of them on file when boarding despite the boarding passes stating otherwise? After a brief detour and insistence through the check in process, all 7 of us boarded through the FTTF lines. At the GS desk I asked about best way to get to the rooms and was told they weren’t ready. I told them we had FTTF and GS told me early rooms are only available to Diamond/Plat members? Huh? Um no, FTTF is included in this. After getting that squared away, I was then told that room availability with FTTF was on the bottom of the list of all the benefits. Really? I told them I don’t care where it’s at in the benefit hierarchy, it’s a benefit. So we compromise and I’m to come back in 10 minutes and get an update from them. Fine. I do this and I’m told 1 of 3 rooms is available. That helps us a lot so I head to the Lido to meet back up with the group where we were in the process of eating Guy’s Burgers. We finish up quickly and make it to the rooms and……all 3 are ready! No idea what is going on but “All is well that ends well was my feeling” and what started off as a rough start and getting me in a chippy mood (due to the not so truthful info) just got better. Some bags are there, some arrive after muster....oh well, not too big of deal really.

Cleanliness of the glass on the aft balconies. Sea spray isn’t a problem to me. If you ever get these you’ll notice every single night a large amount of sea spray hits the glass and leaves residue. It’s different than the port/starboard balcony glass and residue. It’s really unavoidable here and much heavier. However, a few large clumps of dried paint and varnish on the glass can be scrapped off. I used my fingernail to scrap off some of the varnish “runs” that is used to coat the wood railing. I’m sure it was there for quite a while. How hard is it to get a razor type paint scraper and scrap off the clumps of paint and varnish? It’s more unsightly than anything and I’m being a little nitpicky here but…..come on don’t just give up. I’m guessing those on the ship all the time don’t quite see a few things like those there only a short time.

Really, that’s everything I wasn’t crazy about – an incredibly small list.

Good

MDR Food – It’s not always perfect and not big city high quality food but overall it’s good. We all enjoyed it and didn’t have 1 bad meal, just some better than others. The adults ate here every night. I did have a new York strip (ordered rare) that was med to med well and a little tough but still decent. No real complaints and we were all very satisfied with the quality, temp, etc…. Desserts some nights were better than good.

Shows – I only saw a few Liquid Lounge shows (Kennedy & Juggler) but my parents saw and enjoyed them all. My wife and I enjoyed the comedy as that’s where we went. My mom I know would rate this as great.

Room Service – it’s hard to rate this higher with lack of options but when we used it (breakfast on excursion days) it was ample. My daughter (11) ordered for herself (I ate on Lido) and they brought her everything but the kitchen sink right on time. First day….Me to my daughter, “What are you doing”……. Her, “Dad, I didn’t order this much, OMG” Really they brought her what she ordered, just a few more of them or bigger than expected. So I had to help her eat some of it.

Great

MDR Service – We had YTD (Sunrise deck 3) and were there by 7:15 pm or earlier each night. It was usually fairly slow from a crowd standpoint during those times other than elegant nights it wasn’t full when we entered (was when we left some nights). Service was fast, friendly and water repeatedly filled over and over. We actually had to cut them off a few times J We couldn’t ask for better service. I was very impressed with the whole group running the show in this dining room. I feel bad reading other reviews of ships where service is poor. Not so with us on this cruise. It was very good.

Balcony size and views – what’s to say? Large and fantastic views .

Lido & area Layout – from Guy’s/Blue Iguana all the way back to the Havana Bar it’s laid out as well as can be. Never a line at the buffet. The most difficult part was avoiding the people walking aimlessly about. Not a care in the world where they were going or who was around them. I witnessed a few collisions. But getting to the food and finding a seat– easy as can be. Oh, no BACON POLICE and they had what they called Chicken something..(can’t remember) but they were chicken tenders. Believe it or not, coffee was good as well. Kind of a strange phenomena but I had coffee in one hand and an ice cream cone in the other hand during breakfast a few mornings. I liked it and not sure why buy they went well together.

Housekeeping – I liked this staff. They weren’t stealth and didn’t attempt to be. They were out in the open and friendly. All needs were met.

Guy’s/Blue Iguana/Ji Ji’s (Lunch) and Cucina (lunch)/New Pizza – all were better than good IMO. Carnival needs to expand this cluster of eateries to more ships the sooner the better. If you can’t find something you really like with this selection of places, you’re not trying. I tried them all and they were very good. My older 2 daughters lived on the pizza.

Itinerary – Never having been to Europe, given 9 days and using Barcelona as the base was pure bliss.

Weather – No rain and not as hot as expected. We hit the jackpot.

Excursions – We didn’t do any with Carnival – it wasn’t intentional but I just am not fond of ANY tour/excursion via a bus with loads of people. It’s just not my thing. We did Provence Connection in Marseilles, RIL in Rome (w/Vatican guide) & Naples (w/Pompeii guide) and my parents did RIL in Florence/Pisa. This will be covered via pictures except Florence (I didn’t go). My parents liked the excursion with RIL, enjoyed it but…..Florence did not meet what they were expecting (not RIL or their travel group, just the city and that just based on expectations). Otherwise the excursion were highly valued.

Debarkment – only 3 announcements to leave (as of 8:45 am) and they were not long, not loud and very reasonable. We were not hounded at 6 am to get off the ship with the in-room loudspeakers. Everything was smooth and it was an enjoyable relaxed morning. This is an area this ship really seemed to really concentrate on listening to customer complaints (I assume). I’m sure in the past, I know with Carnival, that during debarkment things can get chaotic and the volume and frequency of announcement is ridiculous. Thank you Carnival & Noonan! This low key approach was noticed and appreciated.

Misc –

Cabin temps – rooms get cold if you want it that way. Our steward would close the curtain and turn down the temps when we were gone and when we returned, very cold rooms to the point we had to turn it off for a bit.

Booze – As reported we could bring back what we wanted, which wasn’t much for us

Kids – Probably the biggest benefit for our kids and it rivals the “historical” information gathered on the excursions was the interaction with other kids. It took them a few nights to find their niche and which other kids they were compatible with and who they weren’t but they had a blast. Meeting kids from the UK, Russia, Libya, Portugal, Israel (to name a few countries) really was a fantastic experience for them. They loved it and I do believe it will expand their outlook/views on life outside the U.S.

Kids comments: “Best vacation ever”. “Oh no, now we have to go back to eating real food again” “Now we have to start seeing busses again (school is starting), how gross” Needless to say, they were happy campers.

My Parents – Had never sailed Carnival. They have done Greece, Panama, Alaska, Caribbean all with other lines (I don’t know who) but they did really like carnival. My dad loved the lower prices and the food, my mom loved the balcony (their first), the shows and excursions (not Carnival). They did eat at the steakhouse place and said it was very good. They will sail Carnival again if able. Only comment my dad made that was less than positive is the number of kids. He did say he knew it wouldn’t be an issue if they sailed during the school season.

Buffet – Um, for those of you that have never eaten before…you know you can go back to the buffet and get more, don’t you? You don’t have to load your plate and leave half of it to be thrown away. Seriously people, use your brain, it’s not hard. This really irritates me and it’s at all buffets, just not on cruise ships.

Europeans (in general of course) – thinner and in better shape. The women, thanks for the outfits if there’s enough material there to meet that definition. But if they’re all concerned with diet and health how do you justify smoking like a chimney? WOW! In the evenings standing on deck 6 aft stairway (2 floors above back of the casino entrance) I could smell the smoking. On the excursions around towns….grrrrr, smoking everywhere. I don’t understand?

As an FYI, I didn’t know this - having never been in Europe - and not much of a history buff, Rome is Roma. It’s spelled Roma and pronounced Roma (Rome-uh). Naples is Napoli and pronounced Napoli (Nap – OH – LEE). So why in the world do we (in US) say Rome and Naples? Just call those cities Roma and Napoli and be done with it.

I have read a lot of negative issues with Carnival and/or Sunshine and I know there were without a doubt a lot of early kinks with the Sunshine but this cruise was damn near perfect. This cruise would lived up to Sarge’s love of Carnival. It was an A+, which is only partially due to Carnival, but I was still impressed. But know I’m not a big fan of flutin tootin high level service. I stayed at a Ritz Carlton once and….never again. I wanted to tell their service people to get the beep away from me for a bit. I’m not real needy and prefer to take care of myself.

Non-Cruise note: La Sagrada Familia – what an architectural masterpiece. A truly fascinating place with some great views from the towers. The Coliseum in Rome is certainly older with much more history but Sagrada Familia is right there with it as far as being a fascinating place IMO.

Have to go again, but here are a few pre-cruise pics from Barcelona

This cracks me up. You know you have notoriety when others use you as a scale for satisfaction in their review! :)

This cruise would lived up to Sarge’s love of Carnival.

Also, I went to La Rambla in 2000. What an awesome city (Barce). We stayed out til 2:30 am, and families were out enjoying the night life, even lil bitty ones. I thought "what a safe place!" (grew up in Michigan so...) anyway I hope it's still that way even with the economic problems. LOVE SPAIN...

The Barcelona that I experienced was very safe. That first night I was walking the streets after midnight and even got lost. Never felt the slightest concern.

Two cities we visited where I could do land vacations are Barcelona and Rome. Soooo much to do in each city.

As far as the drips, I covered that in other posts...they are there but really, just keep walking, it didn't appear to but much of an issue to anyone I saw. It certainly wasn't for us.

Here are some more pictures. I'm going in the order I took them.

Some important instructions (remember I said in order I took pictures so I had to figure this out early ;) :

Some fun entertainment in a square in Aix

MedCruise-Disk1394_zps9e36a201.jpg

More of a story with this picture. Apparently on Saturday's, or at least this Saturday, muliple weddings take place in this square. There's a goverment or church like courtyard with chapel. The families and friends all hang out until it's time for their particular wedding. It's a fun time and you can see here the Bride was brought through the square, presumably by the maid of honor, on a motorcycle. The crowd had a good time with it.

So happy that you guys had a great cruise. We are booked on Deck 6, Aft wrap next May. Several of our friends are on the aft-extended decks, so we plan to open the dividers and have one large deck.

I have a question? First, do you have any photos of the cabin? Second, when they refurbished the rooms and bathrooms, did they put shelves above the bathroom sinks? They didn't have those shelves when it was Destiny.

Did your cabin have a the safe in the closet?

Thanks again for sharing.

I don't have any of the inside of the cabins? It was usually my relaxing point and I didn't get any. I do have the aft wrap balcony pictures and I'll put them here, they are from my phone.

Yes, 4 shelves, 2 above each side of the sink. It was plenty of room for us. Bathrooms were small but very functional. Each room did have a safe in the closet. In all 3 of our rooms we had no problems at all. All were new and everything worked as intended. The aft balconies were not sparkling clean and really could use some prep work, but, the size and views were great and that is what was important to us. The chairs/loungers were brand new and I thought they were very good.

Pic 2 - there were 2 loungers, at least 1 chair and I believe a small table.

So I yell at these guys that we need help, pronto. But, they didn't seem to know what a CHOG was? Perhaps it was a language barrier?
