San Pedro to Hollywood

We are disembarking at San Pedro, we are spending a couple of days post-cruise in Hollywood at Hollywood and Highland. Any suggestions for the best was to get from the pier to the hotel. It seems a cab would be at least $60, there is public transportation, but with luggage a little bit of a challenge and it also seems the pier is not close to the metro line.

We would like to do a shore excursion that goes to the airport, but get off before that, but I am not sure that would be permitted.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There is no easy way to take public transportation from San Pedro, especially if you have more than 1 piece of luggage. I have looked into it as we like to take public transportation to Long Beach.

Look at either PrimeTime Shuttle or SuperShuttle.

We will be on the jewel that time also. Looking at marriott propertys as I have points to use. Considering the residence inn beverly hills, free hot breakfast, and free local shuttle (3 mile radius).

Would be willing to share a supershuttle with you if it would help from the port.

Estimated Travel Time:

7.0 mi, 17 min driving from hollywood & highland to residence inn.

Thanks, I looked at the shuttle and it was $60 per person (there are two of us) and the cab was around $85, but did not charge extra per person. Seems kind of crazy that a cab is cheaper than the shuttle, but at the moment, unless something else comes along, looks like we will be taking the cab.

Same as Orlando, Fl. Worlds #1 tourist destination.

Yes we live in Tampa, and Florida has plenty of its own craziness including fatalities. I lived in Atlanta for 11 years and it was not always the safest. There can be violence anywhere, but I wouldn't let it stop me from traveling. Best to mitigate risk and be aware of surroundings.

Backing this up a bit...

What went on in Hollywood last week was apparently a gang thing...with members of one gang attacking members of a rival gang...possibly both from another part of LA...what made it newsworthy WAS that it occurred in the tourist hub of Hollywood and Highland. This specific location is usually NOT where one would find such attacks. They do go on with some regularity in other parts of the city...and never make the news.

I am not saying that Hollywood is completely safe...but it is not exactly a war zone where homicide is a regular danger...

The usual dangers in this part of Hollywood are more typical: Be wary of pickpockets...If you are out at very odd hours (like 2:00 am or later), you might find a mugger or two...you will see drug pushers, drug addicts, winos, hookers and an assortment of all sorts of street people, the homeless, runaways, panhandlers, et al. In some respects, it can be fairly entertaining...

The immediate area around Hollywood and Highland is well-patrolled by the LAPD...and the Loews Hotel and Hollywood and Highland Complex themselves are very well protected--for the most part...which is why the event last week was major news...

Thanks Steve.

When I worked in downtown Atlanta, you had to step over sleeping homeless people from the train station to the office.

In Tampa they have tried to enforce several ordinances against panhandling to various degrees of success. It seems like over the last five - ten years the aggressiveness of the panhandlers has gotten worse, how much of that is due to the economy?

Having been on several cruises, and traveling a lot, I feel like we have already come across a fair amount of drug dealers, homelessness, and street violence. i am not surprised when you mix desperate people and tourists with disposable income.

Hollywood was definitely in decline 10 years ago but has been cleaned up a lot. When the city and merchants realized they were losing a lot of tourist dollars, it kicked off the "cleanup". More restaurants and stores, a major new hotel/shopping complex, the tatoo/porno/head shops are fewer and less conspicuous, and ne'er-do-wells (pickpockets, aggressive street performers, petty criminals, etc) are the focus of a big police presence. It's very similar to Times Square or the "tourist" parts of Mexican cities. However, go a few blocks off the main Hollywood streets and you may be in a very sketchy neighborhood (or just as easily a street lined with multimillion-dollar estates).

Hope this adds to the other posts and paints a more accurate picture.

In the mid-80s, I worked at a company on Highland (I think it was just south of Sunset). The front door of the building (that housed only the advertising agency) was always kept locked. A few years later, I worked on Sunset Blvd near Crescent Heights in a "house" (it was the northern boundary of the residential area). I felt safe walking around during the day, but we could look out of the front picture window and see the streetwalkers then too.

  • 4 weeks later...

You might consider using Sunseeker Tours and seeing what you can work out with them. They do full and half-day tours of L.A., Hollywood, and the beaches. They pick up at all cruise terminals and hotels in Long Beach/San Pedro. It might be more expensive than a cab but also more fun.

We did the same thing earlier in the year and used zippy shuttles. They were great and from memory reasonably priced. It's a private van which is nice and you pay for the van not per person. A taxi could end up a lot more than $85, as traffic around LA is horrible!
