Your review is wonderful! I can't wait to read the next installment! Can you tell me if the couch doubling as a bed was comfortable and did the cabin steward make the it up for you each evening? Thank you for taking the time to write such a humorous review.

well our 21 year old daughter slept on it and didn't find it too bad-bear in mind however she is a University student and so used to uncomfortable beds!

yes the cabin steward made up the bed each night and back to a couch when tidying the next morning.

I've been away on a business meeting for the last few days and hopefully will continue the review soon as this dose of real life needs to be counteracted by reliving the holiday!:D

we docked in Bermuda 8am and had arranged to meet our tour guide David Fox at 9.15.many people manage to tour Bermuda by bus and ferry but knew that wasn't an option for 6.

I'd researched the Bermuda boards for blue flag taxi drivers and booked David Fox based on recommendations and his email response to us

He met us outside the ship with a name card and suggested we wait in a shelter while he brought the taxi closer. This was a 6-8 seater van that cost $40 per hour for a 5-6 hour tour of the islands.

David was celebrating his 48th wedding anniversary with a family meal later that night and one of his granddaughters was about to start studying medicine at the University of Nottingham in the UK so we had plenty to talk about.

he was a very informative guide and drove all around the islands with photo stops

we were at St Georges 11-45 in time for the "wench dunking"

This was hilarious and provided regular work for 3 retired actors for an hour each day

There was audience participation with "strongmen" to assist in operating the dunking stool and 1 unfortunate picked to be the town drunk and tied to the whipping post-hint don't make yourself stand out by smoking or you too may be "chosen"

wow was the audience tough! The wench was judged not contrite enough and required extra dunkings and the town drunk nearly wasn't released[not even his family supported him!]

Back on the ship D and I headed up to Spice H20 for some sun at an almost deserted ship. However it got too windy so we retired to the sheltered balcony

all was well until the Hyenas returned to tell everyone within earshot[half the ship] about their great day at Elbow Beach.

fortunately they were predictable with an hour of noise and eating room service before going off for their evening

We had another evening in Shakers bar but I had an early night leaving D and 6 to make the most of the UBP.Fortunately no sleep disturbance tonight!

Thank you for the reply about the couch. We have cruised with NCL many times with our children on multiple ships and the one complaint they had was how uncomfortable and short the couch which pulls out into a bed can be on the Dawn, Gem, and Jewel. We usually have the stewards place an egg crate on them to make it softer, but I see the design of the third bed on the Breakaway is different.

I woke after a good nights sleep feeling much better thank goodness-still not sure what was wrong-just felt really drained.

I found a text from eldest son [23] sarcastically saying he was a bit concerned that hadn't had word from me bragging about our holiday-OK will make up for it when we get home!

D and I headed off for the spa-we were determined to get our moneys worth! It was practically deserted as despite it being an overcast day most people were off the ship.

After lunch 6 decided to stay on board but D and I went ashore to explore the dockyard. Or rather trying out the free wifi at a coffee and frozen yoghurt building where with a purchase you got 30 mins free wifi.D "needed" to check her emails and facebook and to communicate with her boyfriend.

We spent longer in there than planned as it started to pour it down so waited till it subsided and headed back to the ship.We found 6 in the cabin resting on the bed.He coped pretty well on board-walk from bar to bar and elevate feet as necessary!

Have you noticed the theme so far-D and I spend mother/daughter time while 6 goes and makes friends with the bar staff!

A word about accessibility on board. There have been several comments about narrow corridoors by the cabins-the recessed doors did make it easier to pass but could have been tricky with a wheelchair and the ever present stewards carts.

Deck 5 which was used for disembarking had much wider corridoors so would be a better option for wheelchair users

elevators were forward and more central than aft but wasn't an issue with a walk from our aft balcony. We never noticed long waits for one.

Our evenings were usually spent on deck 8 in shakers bar so it was an easy walk back to the cabin up 1 flight of stairs

we found deck 9 to be pretty accessible to where we needed to be

Anyway back on board for lunch the ship was very quiet-the casino was closed whilst in Bermuda so walking through that area was quiet but the smell of stale cigarette smoke lingered. The Noodles bar was definitely the wrong place for an additional fee restaurant just adjacent!

we headed back for a chill on the balcony-the advantage of the huge mostly covered balcony was that the loungers were dry at the back after the downpour.[We had no noisy neighbours today-the rain kept them off the balcony]

We decided to eat in Savor that night and bumped into cruise director Dan who asked us how things were going-was able to tell him would definitely be sailing again as had just applied for the cruise rewards.

It will come as no surprise that we finished the evening at Shakers with me trying to make up for my shortfall in the UBP.

The Waterfront balcony was just the other side of the window and the outdoor seats were rapidly vacated when a storm started and the rain was coming down in a waterfall from the roof overhang. However it was pretty spectacular to watch the lightening!

a note about that Waterfront outdoor seating area-it seemed to be mainly used by smokers so any non smokers looking for an area to enjoy the outside area would be disappointed

OK end of day 5

Awoke to an overcast day and headed to the spa populated by 4 people!

D had done a massage course and offered to give me a back massage so had a personal massage on the balcony. I must admit she's not afraid to dig in and attack those knots and apparently my back was very red!

However I did feel very relaxed afterwards so told her to leave a slip and would add a generous gratuity!

the aft was a good place to watch activity in the dockyard but any plans to go ashore were scuppered by a torrential downpour. To be honest our first day on Bermuda gave us our sightseeing fix so it was nice to enjoy the quiet ship for those other port days.

we later found a letter on the bed reminding us we were coming to the end of our cruise and to think about disembarkation-NO NOT YET

I did however go to guest services to get an up to date account-the TV service shows every single drink and doesn't take account of UBP

There were a few drinks charged that shouldn't have been and it took her ages to sort-just as well didn't leave till Sunday morning with a queue of people

Getting back in the elevator then had one of those moments where you wonder whether you have been transported to another ship

a group of women got on complaining about how bad the cruise was and how over hyped it was and they would be on facebook as soon as they got home!

Thank goodness they seemed to be unfamiliar with cruise critic. It just brought home to me how you cant please everyone-personally I was having a wonderful time!

sitting in the shade of our balcony that afternoon watching a spectacular lightening storm was pretty entertaining!

Unfortunately the Hyenas next door decided to participate in the wet sailaway with loud comments as to what was happening[have eyes in my head actually]

funny how on the sailaway from New York there were plenty of people visible on balconies but while the Hyenas were out there no one else showed their face-probably like me keeping well back and rolling eyes!

there was an Invicta watch sale starting in the shopping area 6-30 and as we walked past at 6-25 all the watches were covered with sheets and an NCL employee was warning people if they didn't keep back on to the marble floor until the appointed hour they wouldn't be allowed to buy!!

sorry but even with the supposed 70 % off they still weren't cheap!

We had an invitation to the lattitudes party at 7-15 which was supposed to be in H2O but because of weather was switched to Fat Cats.

My Friend Sean the hotel director greeted me by name again -any other husband might have expressed jealousy-not 6!!!

The free drinks were pretty rough-reckon I'm no wine connoisseur but both red and white wines were awful!

after a quick garden café supper we headed for our usual evening at Shakers where the entertainment was D batting her big blue eyes at her infatuated waiter and trying to charm a souvenir champagne glass out of him!

the fireworks started about 10-45 so D and I headed to the waterfront area outside to watch

The piano player called out-don't leave me pretty ladies!

Was 6 jealous yet-yeah right!!!

the sea day was sunny sky and calm seas

We had breakfast in garden café where we had added entertainment in the form of singing coffee waiters!

The male was fantastic at Celine Dion and Whitney Houston covers!!!

D and I headed for our spa fix-noticeably busier than when docked in Bermuda

As it was a nice day we decided to sun ourselves on the balcony-passing the pool deck it was packed!

lying on those loungers sunning ourselves and listening to the sound of the waves was heaven, definitely glad up graded to the aft

However if our Hyena friends had spent more time on their neighbouring balcony could have been a different story!

Lunchtime we searched a few bars until we found 6 in O Sheehans and ordered wings and a beer.

Then ordered a cocktail to take back to the room and start packing.

OK it's still sunny-drink cocktail whilst lying on lounger instead!

A heavy shower started so that was the signal to start packing. We'd made the mistake of choosing "easy off" disembarkation where you carry off your own luggage on a previous cruise. Unless you are going to be first off the ship and away home you will find packed elevators and short tempers.

we had priority disembarkation luggage tags so packed attached them and left suitcases outside door for collection

We had left our complimentary meal for the last night[as an apology for the noise issues on Tuesday night. This was really to make sure my appetite was back to normal!

We don't pay for the speciality restaurants as we are perfectly happy with the included restaurants but thought this would be an opportunity to see what everyone raves about Le Bistro

Well I'm sorry but fail to see what all the fuss is about. We prefer simple food and found the food to be too highly seasoned for our tastes.

As for the free bottle of wine-I now see why people complain about Tisdale-that white was pretty rough-we didn't finish the bottle!!!

Ok off to Shakers for some decent wine and D-a maths undergraduate--worked out the value for money of the ultimate beverage programme.

WE did come out ahead but that was because in order to get best value we drank more expensive drinks than normally would.

Most of our cruises have been port intensive and so off the ship most days so lunchtime/afternoon cocktails wouldn't usually be on the agenda.

On a pay as you go basis 6 would be better off with his usual beer bought drink by drink

Wine by the glass is more expensive but I would usually go for a wine bottle package-although have heard this may not be offered in future if the UBP or corks and caps package takes over.

D showed her graphs and findings to our favourite waiter who was very interested and confessed he had made an extra$100 the last week as an result of the UBP.

D had been unable to charm a champagne glass out of him the previous night as apparently were only if you bought a package with bottle of champagne.

However the big blue eyes were batting again and he did bring her 2 "fishbowls" which cocktails are served in and emblazoned Ncl so she was happy[has filled them with pot pouri and now smelling out her flat[much to her boyfriends disgust!]

We closed the night out at Howl at the Moon and our "jesus man pianist" shook our hands as we left for the night

it was requested to vacate your cabin by 8-30 so set alarm for 7.We had only hand luggage so no worries about getting around.

If you needed priority or special assistance off the ship meet at theatre 8.15.

However we were in no rush and decided to have a leisurely cooked breakfast in O Sheehans which was serving till 9am.

we just enjoyed our food and watched the scrum as people laden with cases were shuffling their way round the public areas trying to get off the ship.By 9-40 the rush had died down so we made our way to theatre and off the ship. There was a line of ships officers waving us off and my friend Sean the hotel director recognised us and shook our hand.

We should have exited the ship at the other end as we had a long walk along the length of the ship to get to security

A lady spotting 6 limping fast tracked us and we were soon through immigration and reunited with our luggage.

At this point as have sailed on Epic and Breakaway a few comments.

The controversial bathroom design on Epic was never an issue for us but the Breakaway has a conventional design.

The flow of people seemed to work better on Breakaway than Epic-on Epic never seemed to spot people as easily around the ship.

Entertainment was similar but much preferred Rock of Ages to Blue Man Group

Spas were similar but Epic had an open aft balcony with padded loungers. However in reality it was always difficult to actually find one available.

The salt room on Breakaway-not sure what that was about-just a cool room with salt sprinkled on floor. We joked that we had been in the fridge and the freezer-the fridge being the salt room and the freezer being the ice bar!

I didn't do the ice bar on Epic-didn't want to go in by myself and 6 would not appreciate effect on his joints!

Having D along meant could do lots of mother daughter things like enjoy the spa and experience fun of the ice bar-however wear leggings and socks!!!!

The waterfront area gave welcome outdoor space missing on Epic but the seated areas were predominantly used as smokers areas.

Spice H2O on Epic had no view of the sea because of opaque panels-they were clear on Breakaway

We'd bought a posh pass on Epic but didn't get the vibe pass on Breakaway as our aft balcony gave us our private area

OK so that concludes the ship review part.I will continue with a review of our stay in New York as that is relevant to the walking difficulties aspect

Cruising is ideal for 6 as he can pace himself on the ship-on land it can be very different!

so reunited with our luggage we followed signs for taxis and made our way out of the building. There was a port employee making sure everyone crossed the road safely. There was a line of yellow taxis but most people were crowding into an area to the left for lift pick ups. So we were able to jump straight into a taxi for the $7 ride to our hotel Hilton Garden inn West 35th st /6TH Avenue

Rooms were not yet available so we registered and left luggage and took a taxi straight back to the pier area 84 to pick up our tickets for New York water taxi and 911 memorial

The water taxi is a hop on service which does a loop from pier 84 Greenwich village Battery park Financial district Dumbo[district under manhattan bridge overhang-if I remember correctly ] and then back to pier 84

there is live commentary and a good way to sightsee

Battery park is the nearest stop for 911 memorial but there was a lot more walking than we had anticipated!

Battery park is under construction after damage from hurricane Sandy and everyone is funnelled along a central walkway-risk of jostling for 6.Also it was several hundred yards along Broadway to find the entrance to 911 site.

Once at the entrance it's a bit like entering a theme park as you are filtered along weaving lines until you enter an airport like security area.

Unlike our experiences at airport and ship security no one was looking out for people with obvious walking difficulties and fast tracking them. So by the time 6 had done his usual setting of the security scanners and becoming intimately acquainted with security staff he was about at the limits of his endurance.

We suggested he make use of his seat cane and rest while D and I explored the area and could then tell him where to head straight to to appreciate the site

The memorial site is very moving and well done-and that is from someone from the UK with no direct links-can see how would affect those directly involved on that day

Back on the water taxi we got up close to Statue of Liberty for photo ops.

Back at pier 84 we picked up a cab to get us back to the hotel. Bear in mind it was $7 each way earlier in the day-$14 and meter still running we still weren't at the hotel. OK getting West to East does involve 1 way systems to negotiate but this wasn't the same route the taxi driver had taken earlier. As we crossed the intersection of 6th Ave and 34th st-I got the taxi to pull over and we walked the 100 yards to our hotel otherwise we may still be circling around now!!!

By this time our rooms were ready and as we looked out of the window the Empire state building is right in front of us!

If we had been able to combine the good points of Holiday Inn and Hilton Garden Inn we would have had an ideal hotel-as it was they each had good and bad points

The lobby of the Hilton was small and the bar area not as inviting as Holiday Inn

The room was smaller than Holiday Inn but had a better bathroom

There was an empty fridge-great can store your own stuff without worrying about setting off sensors for mini bar and there was a working safe-advantages over Holiday Inn

The location of Hilton is more convenient for main attractions and couldn't get much closer to Empire State Building!

We had met P and her daughter B on a previous cruise several years ago and had kept in touch via facebook. They live in Bayonne so we arranged to meet up. P was due to pick us up outside the hotel at 4pm but texted us to say the traffic was awful and although only a few streets away wasn't moving! No problem we sat at the patio area just in front of the hotel and waited.4.20 she pulled up and hugs all round.

She drove us back to her home the scenic route to get an idea of the differences in neighbourhoods -great tour guide but forgot to tip!!!

She had put on a really great meal which we couldn't make a dent in-well she did say it was an American style meal!!

We were joined by her boyfriend and a young couple from next door and we had a really good sociable night discussing differences in culture, schooling healthcare etc.

We learned that our "European" way of holding fork prongs down and loading fork with several different food types is different from the American way of scooping up with fork and only 1 flavour on the fork at 1 time-do you know that is something I'd never even considered and will take a note when eating out in future!

I think it's safe to say our friendship is now strengthened and sure we will meet again.

However back to hotel and crash out-been a busy day

We had booked "a slice of Brooklyn pizza tour" from 11-3 so didn't bother with breakfast!

Because traffic was bad we decided to walk 20 streets to Union Square-bad move-6 got slower and we nearly missed the coach-got there with 5 minutes to spare.

The coach was full and our guide a very attractive Jewish Italian lady who kept us all entertained. We had a tour round Brooklyn pointing out famous Brooklyn Sights as seen in films.

We had a short walk through a park at base of Brooklyn bridge which gave some wonderful photo ops.

then it was off to Grimaldis pizza place-past the line outside and seated straight away.

soft drinks were included and huge thin slice pizzas of which we managed 2 slices each-delicious. I did take note of P advice the night before on how to eat pizza-fold it and eat with fingers.6 ate the European way with knife and fork!

then back on the coach and past scenery familiar in Saturday night fever and French Connection-the raised train track area.

2nd Pizza stop-L and B Spumani Gardens. Deep pan pizza this time and also delicious but only managed 1 slice as still full from the first place!

Then it was off to Coney island amusement park for a short walk along the beach front. There was the offer to spend more time there and make own way back to Manhattan but we took the coach back option

We got a taxi back-learned our lesson about the long walk and traffic was actually quite light. As we got out of the taxi another couple was about to get in but said to 6 "were you with fabnfortysomething at the meet and greet?"

one of those moments where by the time you react they had gone but hey small world even in New York.

6 decided to put his feet up while D and I explored M and M world. She got some pyjamas me a dressing gown.6 reaction-how old are you?!

Got back to the hotel for 6 pm as were expecting a phone call from Friends in Indianopolis.

We had met K and D on the same cruise as P and B and have also kept in touch. In fact we stalked them last year-booked the same cruise they had and had a great time exploring the Med together.

When we are in the USA they ring us at our hotel as is an low cost phone call for them-certainly cheaper than us ringing from hotel or using mobiles!

1 and a half hours later we finished the phone call!

D and I then headed back out to Macys opposite and bought some souvenir salt and pepper condiment containers in shape of Empire State Building and Chrysler building. Tacky useful and 50% off!!

Then to Mc Donald for take out to eat back in hotel-gourmet eaters we are not.

Just a few notes on New York for mobility challenged

Times Square area is a nightmare if you have balance issues-crowds make it difficult]

We saw very few people in mobility scooters or wheelchairs. There are drop down kerbs but crowds would make very difficult and with the heavy rain there were pools of water to negotiate

cabs are available but crossing west/East or vice versa involves crossing back and forth across avenues and many streets one way so with circuitous routes and heavy traffic cab fares add up.

You also need an able bodied companion to step out and hail one down!

The tours worked well for us but you do need to plan how to get to and from starting points. However it was worth it and we'll be back!

I am so impressed with your husband, AKA 6. Despite his mobility issues he seemed to keep up with his girls. He never let his knees get the best of him. I have very painful knees so can totally relate to his difficulty.

yes he keeps going!

touring Pompeii last year a tour mate said to him "you just don't know the meaning of the word quit do you?"

Unfortunately that's the problem-he pushes himself and suffers the next day!

He wont complain but I can tell when he's starting to grit his teeth and I get snapped at if I ask if he's all right!

That's why try to plan ahead as much as possible to minimise walking

warm weather helps his joints but hot and humid= not good

even worse is cold wet weather-bit of a problem when we live in North East England!

we woke to find the top of the Empire State Building was obscured by low cloud-unfortunately this was our last day and chance to go up there!

Fortunately by time had breakfast, finished packing and storing luggage at the hotel the mist had cleared and the top now visible.

it was an easy walk to the ESB just seemed to take ages to find the correct entrance for the tourists!

I'd bought express passes and upgraded to 102 floor observation which took cost from $27 to $60 but was worth it

The guard said there was only a 10 minute wait but that would have involved a longer walk around the snaking roped areas so the express pass did allow us a shorter more direct walk and we were guided onto the elevators ahead of the regular queue.

There was airport type security which of course 6 set off alarms but they were more concerned about whether to let him take his seat stick through. Apparantly seats are not allowed but when a supervisor cleared it as a walking aid it was passed

The first elevator takes you up to 80th floor and then a separate one up to the 86th floor observation deck .It was very windy up there-ladies don't wear a floaty skirt and if you do make sure your underwear isn't going to cause you further embarrassment! It was also very crowded and felt a touch of vertigo.

However going up to the 102 floor observation platform was a completely different experience,

It is glass enclosed so didn't feel as aware of the height if that makes sense-was more like looking out of an airplane window.

It was much quieter and able to enjoy views more. The inner walls have life sized photos of men constructing the building in the 1930's-who needed gym membership when working up there could give you biceps and forearms like that!!

down to 80th floor exit via the gift shop of course but did buy a 2014 calendar[resisted the king kong clinging to side of ESB models!

Outside we spotted a Starbucks and realised we hadn't had a coffee in USA yet so whiled away time till 1.30 when we decided to collect our bags and head for the airport.

We established a flat fare of $52 to JFK plus $6 toll gratuities optional

6 gave cab driver $70 which I'd calculated as 20% and he demanded $75

Thinking my maths was out handed over extra 5 but later rechecked and realised he'd demanded a 25% tip. On top of that it was the dirtiest cab we'd been in with rips in back of seat!!

Oh well live and learn and gives us more to talk about of our experiences with New York cabbies!

We checked in our bags and requested wheelchair assistance and hey the same guy turned up who got us through 2 weeks previously!

The flight was Ok except for the Diva in the seats behind me who demanded I put my back seat upright as her husband couldn't watch the film in the seat back TV[right you expect me to sit bolt upright on an overnight transatlantic flight!!!]

Thinking she may be a first time flyer I explained the TV screen can be adjusted to allow for seat in front reclined by the miniscule amount you're allowed in economy. Her response " I don't want an explanation I want you to put your seat upright"

Needless to say I ignored her.

I did take note a couple of hours later when heading to the toilet that she was curled up sideways in her seat with her feet against the back of my daughters seat and her seat reclined-mmm double standards?

Also D said that she kept feeling bumps against her back from Madame Divas feet.Oh to get an upgrade to those flat beds in first class!!

So far our experience of wheelchair assistance had been great-that collapsed at Heathrow.

We waited to be last off the plane but no wheelchairs waiting-in fact there were 3 groups of us,1 person in each needing the wheelchair but accompanied by family.

The crew kept phoning to request assistance but by this time the cleaning crew were coming onto the plane!

Fortunately we had a 3 hour gap before our domestic flight home of 45 minutes!

Eventually a single guy arrived with a wheelchair and said he had a buggy waiting at top of gangway but would not be able to take accompanying people as not enough room and we couldn't walk alongside as would be going via an underground security route.

we were all reluctant to split up but the senior air steward had stayed behind to ensure we got the assistance and he escorted the rest of us through to where we met up with 6 again.

This was a small holding area which was packed with people needing assistance and didn't seem to be very organised .Being almost but not quite home we didn't want to risk missing that last flight and so asked how much walking would be required from there to gates.

Oh just 5 minutes said the guy-what he failed to mention was having to go through passport control and then the same security measures we had at JFK! seriously how much more of a "sterile" environment could we be in having cleared security in US onto a plane and then internal connection?

This was by far the worst queues for security and thought was going to make 6 undergo a strip search!

They asked him to put his feet up onto a stool-err can I have my cane back to help with my balance?

remind me never to fly via Heathrow again!!!

Oh the irony when we eventually got through and landed in our local airport there was a wheelchair awaiting him at the gangway-thanks but it's only a couple hundred yards from here to the outside world!!

And so ends our trip to New York and Bermuda

hope you've enjoyed the review and some of the pointers help fellow travellers with walking difficulties
