Aplmac Posted March 28, 2014 #201 Share Posted March 28, 2014 (edited) I'm a sucker for sunsets and sunrises. But where's the video of YOU going down the slide??? Next cruise! I contemplated being brave but I was so 'shooting blind' not knowing what the heck I was getting that I thought it best to just concentrate on the dry stuff. Now I'm five weeks up the learning curve I think I'll try the waterslide on our next cruise -two different ways: * One with the camera pointing back at my face * The other pointing forward, showing the way down the slide! . Aplmac Posted April 7, 2014 #203 Share Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) . Lately, I've been shooting my Silver 3+ at the 1080 Medium setting and I'm finding that to be adequately wide - to the point where I'm even getting the curved horizon in some shots! Unless you're doing seriously-dramatic footage snowboarding off the top of Everest that ultra-wide setting can be over-doing it for more mundane subject matter like dash-cam, regular scenic stuff, etc. When I'm back on the ship, up on top deck, I'll go back to the ultra-wide setting but for now I'm getting pleasing results with the Medium-wide setting! ....................................... I shot this yesterday evening -at the Medium setting - 60 fps. -ryIMCl_6ak It's no big deal subject-wise, but it's wide enough for me. . FireStation46 Posted April 7, 2014 #205 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Here's the deal - the herky-jerky parts: I didn't change from 1080/24 (for early morning time lapse') to 1080/60, so when making the movie I slowed it down even more thinking it was at 60fps. It wasn't so the result is like 12fps instead. Lesson: Constantly check your settings between projects... What settings do you recommend for: Slow motion fast action Time lapse Thanks! Nice videos and editing!
misguidedangel Posted April 8, 2014 #206 Share Posted April 8, 2014 I love my GoPro...admittedly, I should have bought it a month before the cruise to work the bugs out and figure it out. I didn't use it as much on the cruise and New Orleans as I could have if I had been able to read and see some of the YouTube stuff about it.... I have two 32GB cards, the head strap, LCD and battery back pack, tripod mount, non-waterproof skeleton case, Bobber, Grenade Grip, Reach pole, charger, the Frame, a polarized and magenta filter, and I want to get the chesty harness, wrist harness, and a few others I can't remember.... I am so looking forward to snorkeling with it in September....*BG*.... I had someone at work rifle through my purse while I was nuking my lunch. It took only 5 minutes, but they stole money from my wallet and OVERLOOKED the GoPro Hero3 black that was right next to it.....ya, too $15 and left the GoPro with the battery back pack attached....stupid or what, the camera plus backpack was around $450........I was pissed about the $15...I have an idea who it is, but no proof, so can't do anything...still, she is a dumb freak a$$ for not taking the GoPro...... shootr Posted April 10, 2014 #207 Share Posted April 10, 2014 What settings do you recommend for: Slow motion Not sure what you mean fast action 720/120fps if you want to slow the action down a lot, 1080/60fps for super hi resolution and decent slomo Time lapse I film at 1080/24fps for smooth time lapse' of vehicles, etc., but for clouds, sunsets, etc. 12MP Wide or Medium also works well Thanks! Nice videos and editing!Thank you! ...
FireStation46 Posted April 10, 2014 #208 Share Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks. I suppose slow motion is the same as time lapse? I see that when people take multi-shots pictures, that also works for video?
shootr Posted April 10, 2014 #209 Share Posted April 10, 2014 You know those cheapo beverage koozie's that are given away at trade shows and such? They make an excellent GoPro cover! Not too tight, not too loose, gives a little cushioning - found one on my desk Monday from a vendor, love it.
shootr Posted April 10, 2014 #210 Share Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks. I suppose slow motion is the same as time lapse? I see that when people take multi-shots pictures, that also works for video? The GoPro editing software makes it very easy to use individual pictures to create a timelapse - I've never tried other programs yet to see how they do. I started using a Corel editing program and found it much quicker to edit a timelapse that was filmed as a video and sped up than the GoPro program and stills. Also, I don't drop out any frames when I'm speeding up the footage during editing, so the action is always as smooth as it can possibly be. I'm real happy you find GoPro Studio to be "very easy to use" I've found it impossible to even make a start with it! I'm fumbling my way thru Windoze Movie Maker, but at least I'm making some headway and "discovering" new functions all the time. That's called intuitive software. Now and again, when I'm in the mood for some frustration I have a stab at the GoPro Studio thing and can never even get started! That's called un-intuitive! I hate the cold grey terse look of it, for starters. Looks like something out of Dungeons and Dragons? I can't find File - Edit - View - other usual functions on a taskbar. I've given up on it. Seriously. Last time I tried it, it crashed my computer. Screen went entirely blank BLACK -and I had to force a restart after the Escape key did nothing to get me outa there. GoPro has a loooong way to go with this software, just yet . Edited April 11, 2014 by Aplmac
Tommy3putts Posted April 11, 2014 #213 Share Posted April 11, 2014 aplmac's, It's interesting how perspectives differ from person to person. I like gopro studio for the opposite reasons you hate it. I found it easy and intuitive. I especially like it for time lapses. Don't think I can convince you otherwise. But there are many tutorials available on YouTube. Have you tried those? I still use imovie and soon will make the leap to FCP X. But i will still likely always use gopro studio in some form.
shootr Posted April 11, 2014 #214 Share Posted April 11, 2014 Well OK then... Only thing I'll offer is I did struggle with an old laptop and Studio before switching to a newer model and it worked fine. Other forums discuss this ad nauseum and I won't do it here. Suffice to say GoPro merely partnered with a company that had an existing product to provide a very basic editing program for novices. They are a camera company, and anything beyond that (especially free) is an attempt to help purchasers new to this arena get started. As well stated above, there are lots of videos and help forums available to assist with editing struggles-it's how I moved forward and lots of others. shootr Posted April 11, 2014 #215 Share Posted April 11, 2014 I've heard (in passing) of a few very cool Mac programs for editing and doing time lapse projects. Being a PC, I only took notice out of jealousy for the rave reviews they were getting. :) I'd Google around and see what comes up if you haven't already. shootr Posted April 11, 2014 #216 Share Posted April 11, 2014 ... and just for full disclosure, while I fancy myself a geek at 50 years old, I'm learning with you all - I've never gotten into this kind of editing before a few months ago with purchasing the GoPro. Aplmac Posted April 11, 2014 #217 Share Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) Encouraged by this discussion, I made Stab Number Four at GoPro Studio and have actually made a start!! :) I've discovered that 1) GP Studio doesn't tolerate re-sizing (partial-screen/full-screen) on my 19 in. screen so I'll have to go out and buy a 24 in. screen (it looks like?) because that's what it was designed to work with -and nothing less? Strange to say the least. 2) Indeed, GP Studio DOES have controls on a taskbar! I discovered that File, Edit and Help were hiding under my Microsoft Windows Toolbar which I choose to place at the top of my screen, seeing as I started life as a Mac user originally, and always liked my toolbar Up Top. So I'll just have to adapt my toolbar to the Windows default position at the bottom of my screen, in order to live with GoPro Studio! 3) What version am I using? Help won't even give me an About... to verify what version I'm using. This is the first Windows software I've ever come across that doesn't have an About.. under Help to establish what version the user has installed. Assuming this is version 2, I'll be waiting for version 3+ before I can get serious about GP Studio _____________________________________ Like I said earlier GoPro has to work on this software a LOT before this becomes smooth,easily-workable software. "You only get one chance at a First Impression" they say. My first four impressions haven't been great. I'll be sticking with Movie Maker for the forseeable future with occasional stabs at GP Studio to see if I get any further. . How's about.. Let's get started to ensure your GoPro Studio software is up to date I downloaded and installed this GP Studio software about a month ago. Maybe I should try to download again? . Aplmac Posted April 11, 2014 #219 Share Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) I just downloaded the latest GoPro Studio software, as of about 5:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. I now have installed version 2.0.1.319 and by the look of it, nothing has changed: that includes the above mention re. connecting my Hero2 camera. 3 and 3+ are nowhere in sight. . PaulMedik Posted April 26, 2014 #220 Share Posted April 26, 2014 What s/w, other than GoPro studio or Windows Movie Maker, is everyone using? I've tried both and the results are OK when there are results, but now they both just crap out on me. I'm planning to d/l Pinnacle s/w this evening and give it a try. Gear: GoPro Here3+Black and more mounts than I know what to do with....yet. Two spare batteries and charging pack. Monopod
shootr Posted April 26, 2014 #221 Share Posted April 26, 2014 I'm using (learning) Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 and like it a lot. They have a 30 day trial period to see if you like it. I also found lots of tips/tricks video's on YouTube to help learn more of the features - which seems to be extensive enough for me.

I have thousand$ in photo editing s/w, but not really looking forward to $129 for Pinnacle unless I can try it out first (Not sure if Pinnacle has that option or not.) I looked at Adobe's video editing s/w last night, but I have too much Adobe to buy the current bundled version and pay again for s/w I already own. ;)

The reason I had looked at Pinnacle was because it was recommended on GoPro's video support section, but while looking at Pinnacle just now I noticed they are now Corel and all support questions goes to Corel. Given that Corel is $79 and Pinnacle is $129 it's safe to say I'm installing Corel.......in fact it's downloaded now. :)
PaulMedik Posted April 27, 2014 #225 Share Posted April 27, 2014 Mission accomplished! Well, perhaps not accomplished, but at least I now know how I'm going to get r done! Prior to our cruise last week I had ZERO GoPro experience and practically no video editing experience. I learned by trial and error while on our cruise and I certainly have a long way to go. My initial goal was to get my raw video slightly edited for content and get it online to use in my review. I managed to get a half dozen clips online via GoPro Studio and one with Windows Movie Maker, then they both went to crap and I had dozens left to do. My first try with Corel Video Studio X7 was painlessly converted and uploaded to YouTube with no edits at all. My second try with just a title and a few text areas is converting now and will upload automatically when done. Here's my first try;
