believer33323 Posted October 22, 2013 #26 Share Posted October 22, 2013 Since Macy's just announced that they will open all their stores at 8 p.m. on THANKSGIVING DAY, I urge everyone to boycott watching the parade (and it goes without saying to NOT run out to shop on Thanksgiving night). If their tv ratings go down, maybe Macy's management will see the folly of their decision and let their employees have a real holiday next year. Enjoy your parade-less cruises. Wish I was going along with you. What does it say of the American family when after you have the family together to have dinner and give thanks, all of a sudden your Mother and/or Father run out and go shopping. Commercialism at it's best. The more I think about it, I wish I could afford to take my wife and two boys for Thanksgiving on a cruise. But I know my one son could never get off work anyway. GO have a great time.. I'm sure RCCL will have some sort of parade. That sweet potato, onion, spinach & feta tart sounds great, but I would have to have the traditional turkey entre' also. shippmates Posted October 22, 2013 #27 Share Posted October 22, 2013 We have cruises over Thanksgiving the past several years and love it. We celebrate ahead of our sail date. This works for us as our children travel to other family members on Thanksgiving weekend. Celebrate you have family with you and can have a turkey dinner without all the work. Record the parade and watch it when you get home if you can not find it on the ship. This may become your new Thanksgiving tradition. Enjoy your cruise I know that we will. sweetpee_1993 Posted October 23, 2013 Author #28 Share Posted October 23, 2013 Thanks everyone. I don't usually cook or clean the traditional dinner at home. A few years of going thru all that and the kids pretty much turning up their noses was enough for us to start going out + a movie. It's the morning routine, the sweet rolls & monkey bread, the endless sale papers, and listening to the parade that I'll sorta miss. That's my Thanksgiving warm 'n fuzzy. Eh, we'll prob'ly pretend its another day, DVR the parade, & have a do-over day after we get home. ;)
bcarney Posted October 23, 2013 #29 Share Posted October 23, 2013 We've gone on Thanksgiving several times (see my sig). It's probably my favorite way to celebrate the holiday - to give thanks that I am able to be on a cruise!
Candleonwater Posted October 23, 2013 #30 Share Posted October 23, 2013 This is our second straight year of sailing during Thanksgiving. LOVE it. As everyone has said, so nice to not have to worry about cleaning up... but I did miss turkey sandwiches afterwards!!!
hshowalter Posted October 23, 2013 #31 Share Posted October 23, 2013 Last year there was no Thanksgiving; because we were flying to Singapore to get on the Solstice & we went across the Intl. National Date Line. About 15 years ago we were on Princess & my wife had turkey & I had Bison.
pam_1024 Posted October 25, 2013 #32 Share Posted October 25, 2013 We're sailing on Allure with my inlaws for Thanksgiving week. I just had a total panic moment when I realized for the first time that I can remember I won't get to see or hear at least some of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Ugh! Thinking of all the little traditions that will be different this year. I'm so sad! But I wonder what all is done to observe the day onboard the ship. Anyone want to share past Thanksgiving experiences??? My son and I were on the Jewel for Thanksgiving 2011. We both agree it was the best Thanksgiving ever! Spent the day at Maya Chan in Costa Maya drinking "Thanksgiving pina coladas", swimming and watching football on a big screen TV. :D They served a traditional Thanksgiving meal in the MDR (there were other choices available also). Wasn't quite as good as our Kentucky Thanksgiving dinner but I didn't have to cook or clean up so i thought it was wonderful! When we woke up the next morning Christmas elves had been putting up Christmas decorations and it was beautiful! They even had black Friday sales all over the ship which i thought was kinda hilarious. You will have a wonderful time!
carajo Posted October 31, 2013 #33 Share Posted October 31, 2013 We had our first family cruise over Thanksgiving 3 years ago. My favorite memory of the week was walking along the shore at a private island off Cozumel looking for shells and realizing at home folks were standing in long lines because it was Black Friday. I knew then and there which of the two locations I would choose for every year to come (it wasn't the long lines!). p.s. even the kids didn't miss any of the "traditions"
maureencruiser Posted October 31, 2013 #34 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Have fun with it! Dress up like turkeys and get your pictures taken! :D
joeski27 Posted October 31, 2013 #35 Share Posted October 31, 2013 What I wish is that they would do like 5am black Friday door busters in all the shops, including coach & britto, and everything on the promenade. That would really keep everyone in the Thanksgiving spirit! Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
parrotfeathers Posted October 31, 2013 #36 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Plus no family drama to deal with on a ship during a holiday.
griffy116 Posted October 31, 2013 #37 Share Posted October 31, 2013 We normally only have the money to cruise once a year and with our various schedules, can only cruise during the summer months. I can't tell you how much we talk about one day, our family being able to spend Thanksgiving AND Christmas on a cruise ship. I loved seeing the Thanksgiving menu, reading about the decorations going up and the lack of family drama, cooking, planning, preparing, clean up and all the wasted leftovers that no one wants to admit that they REALLY don't want to eat. If I had a Thanksgiving or Christmas cruise planned, I would be beside myself with excitement!
sweetpee_1993 Posted October 31, 2013 Author #38 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Plus no family drama to deal with on a ship during a holiday. I dunno...we're cruising with 8 others from DH's family. Its unlikely unless the teenagers get their drawers in a twist amongst each other (5 of them ranging in ages 16-19). ;)
