Questions Regarding Premier Inn West Quay, Southampton

Recommended Posts

We will be staying there one night before our cruise and I was hoping others might be able to answer a few questions for me.

  • Do you know if they will let you check-in early? Will they let us drop of luggage?
  • Is there a pub or local restaurant in the area for a quick meal? We rarely get to England and would love something with a local flavor.
  • Does the hotel have a bar where we could meet up with fellow cruisers?
  • Breakfast is included and I was wondering what it consisted of?
  • How much is a cab from the hotel to the docks?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

All within a 5 to 10 minute walk of Premier Inn:

For decent pub-grub in an historic pub, try the Duke of Wellington in Bugle Street or the Red Lion in High Street. Or cheapest pub-grub at the Standing Order in High Street - more of a working-men's pub run by the Wetherspoons chain, known for their ales & cheap food though the good-value grub isn't special & I rate the surroundings a bit spit-and-sawdust..

A number of other pubs in the area, though some, such as the attractive Bos'uns Locker (aka Juniper Berry) in Bugle Street, don't serve food.

These are all pubs, & it's pub service - don't expect a charming girl to bound up to you, show you to a table & take your order. In the main, you find your own table, buy your drinks & order your food at the bar - usually with a swipe of your credit card at the same time. And settle-up at the bar when you're done.

Decent greek food nearby at George's Restaurant, a bit of a Southampton institution. Un-prepossessing building, but excellent food, excellent value.

Italian & oriental restaurants in the area too.

For a wider selection, head for Oxford Street - about a 15 to 20 min walk, mebbe take a taxi back.

Few restaurants in Southampton levy a service charge (if they do it has to be clearly stated on the menus, both outside & inside the establishment), there's no tax added, & what you see is what you pay.

Be aware that tips in the UK are at a much lower level than in the US (staff are paid decent wages) and discretionary. In a full-service restaurant most folk leave about 10% or less, some folk just don't tip.

No need to leave a tip if a service charge is levied.

And for pub-type service, zero to a couple of pounds is fine - the service is minimal.

Or your hotel has a small bar/restaurant http://www.premierinn.com/en/admin/restaurants/brands/thyme.pdf.bodyrestaurantinfo.Single.DinnerMenuPdfFile.tmp/DinnerMenu.pdf

If you're fit, the weather's fine, & you've got rolling luggage you might care to walk to City Cruise Terminal. About 10 - 15 mins (cut thro' the Holiday Inn car-park).

All cruise terminals are within a 5-minute taxi ride, won't be more than £8.

Haven't stayed at that Premier Inn, but usually there's no problem with dropping off luggage early - or even getting your room if it's ready. Full English breakfast, I think.

We stayed there in August.

They will hold your luggage until you check in. There is no car parking at this hotel, you park in the shopping mall with a reduced parking rate. There is space behind the hotel to unload the car.

There is a small bar area in the lobby.

The breakfast is very good, the normal British breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, beans, hash potato, bread, oatmeal, cereal, juice, coffee, tea, buffet style.

The restaurant is open for dinner.

You need to use your room key for the elevator.

Taxi to the port is less than 10 GBP.

The shopping mall is a few minutes walk away.
