Iamthesea Posted November 8, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2013 The entire time I was reading the following article, I was thinking..."It's too bad that there are no ships setting sail from the U.S. this season, to cross the pond." http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013...ded-in-us?lite I was wrong! :) I didn't know that the Queen Mary 2 crosses. Yes, she does. But not nearly often enough for us transatlantic fans.
Oahucruiser Posted November 9, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 9, 2013 The Queen Mary 2 has been doing it for ten years now and before that the Queen Elizabeth 2 sailed transatlantic for many years. The crossings are very special sailings; you should try one. You'll be hooked.
Iamthesea Posted November 9, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted November 9, 2013 lol I didn't finish my above sentence. I meant to say "I didn't know that the Queen Mary 2 (or any other cruise ship) crosses over the pond to Europe in the Fall." All other ships are coming back over to the U.S. ;)
Rare BlueRiband Posted November 9, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 9, 2013 While other ships cross the Atlantic only for "repositioning" moves Queen Mary 2 still makes scheduled crossings between May and December, New York and Southampton.
brigittetom Posted November 9, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 9, 2013 I'm kind of wondering what the Mayo clinic did to that poor man's hormones to make him gain all that weight.
Salacia Posted November 20, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 20, 2013 According to reports, he was denied passage on the QM2 due to medical concerns. He flew to London on Virgin Airways. The Eurostar wouldn't allow him to take the train to France, but P&O will take him across on the ferry. Whitemarsh Posted November 21, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Didn't I read somewhere that he was the same weight as when he came? David I'm not surprised, after all I am not sure the "Mayo" clinic was the appropriate place to send someone with weight issues.
Rare BlueRiband Posted November 21, 2013 #10 Share Posted November 21, 2013 There were probably several "medical security" issues that prevented him from sailing TA. He would have needed a custom life jacket. Transport to the medical center would be a problem if none of the stretchers supported his weight. And finally, the man's physical bulk may have made him unable to board a lifeboat. Any carrier is in a lose-lose situation here. Turn the passenger away and get bad press as cruel and uncaring. Accept him and run afoul with international safety regulations.
Salacia Posted November 21, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Didn't I read somewhere that he was the same weight as when he came? David According to various reports: he weighted slightly less than when he arrived. His weight was the result of hormone problems, and his medical problems began when he was an infant. Salacia Posted November 21, 2013 #12 Share Posted November 21, 2013 The AP reports the young man has arrived home safely: "PARIS (AP) - An obese Frenchman who sought medical care in the United States and was refused travel by planes, trains and even a cruise ship has returned home after an overnight ambulance ride that crossed half of France. Roger Chenais, the uncle of Kevin Chenais, said Thursday his 22-year-old nephew and the young man's parents arrived around 9 a.m. in their home near the Swiss border, 740 kilometers (460 miles) from the port of Calais, where he arrived on a ferry..." http://www.wtsp.com/news/article/345677/58/Man-deemed-Too-Fat-to-Fly-finally-heading-home
