Hurrah for Princess Travel Insurance

We have had to file claims twice on our Princess insurance (thru Aon Affinity, Berkley Travel). I am pleased to say that the process was painless (except for getting sick in Panama).

In September on a Saturday we had a carryon stolen in Venice, losing car keys, camera, cell phone, & passports. We had to travel by train to Milano & wait til Monday to get emergency replacement passports, & return to Venice to fly out Tuesday.

Aon paid all the hotel, meal, & train costs, & 80% of the value of the stolen items. This was only because we could not provide receipts for their purchase, or we might have gotten full value. The only real cost was the passports, which are not covered by the policy.

We thank Aon for their quick work,

Pete & Steve

We bring a netbook on our vacations for the sole purpose of backing up our photos. (Although I have an SLR, and use RAW files, which take up a LOT of space.) Used netbooks should be available at this point for really cheap... your only real requirement is "not broken", anything off of Craigslist or eBay that boots will get the job done.

If you don't want that kind of weight, at this point, your best bet is a tablet or phone with both enough internal storage capacity to hold your photos, and a way to get the photos on (to load them), and off (to put them on a new memory card.)

You'd think there would be a plethora of portable hard drives with a memory card slot; you plug the drive into a USB charger, put in a card, push a button, and it offloads whatever is on the card. But there isn't. The few devices on the market have full-color displays, internal batteries, WiFi, photo and video preview, etc. And with all those features, the very cheapest is $100 (hard disk not included.)
