I am visiting Grand Cayman in January. Can you please give me information on any of the following:

Good restaurants near the port?

Beach near the port and how to get there on your own?

Best Mayan site to visit?

Any activities in walking distance from the port?

A good place to find out ALL about GC would be a guidebook! Your library has them. It's always a good idea to research the ports you'll visit!

There is shopping just across the street from the tender dock. There are buses to take you to the beaches....all are public and have chair/umbrella rentals!

There are dozens within a reasonable distance of the port. You'll have to be more specific about your definition of "good" to help narrow it down.

Beach near the port and how to get there on your own?

Seven Mile Beach - take a bus or taxi

Search in this forum and you'll find dozens of threads on the various sections of the beach and what each offers.

Best Mayan site to visit?

Try your Mexico port visits - there's never been any Mayans in Cayman unless they were there on vacation :D

Any activities in walking distance from the port?

Shopping, museum, restaurants

Anything else will require a bus or taxi

Bookbabe gave a good reference for restaurants and beach, and is quite correct that the Maya were never in Cayman.

Cayman is one of the few Caribbean islands that was uninhabited at the time of first contact by European explorers. We don't have archaeological sites but there are historical sites of the much younger vintage.

If you are interested in a bit of Cayman history then rent a car and make your way to the Pedro St James historic site. Upon your return to the port area you will have time to check out the Cayman National Museum on the George Town waterfront.
