London Story: Why Sydney Is Special, Exciting!!

We are just 44 days from starting our Jan. 20-Feb. 3 Solstice Sydney to Auckland cruise.

From the Daily Mail newspaper travel section in London yesterday, they have this headline: "Sydney's spirit: Abandon the British winter and embrace Australia's high energy city" with these highlights: "Sydney can be summed up by one of its best loved sports - surfing. This city is athletic, daring, frequently sunny and always a breath of fresh air. We Britons have a long affinity with Australia, but it’s only when you make the 21-hour flight that you appreciate why Charles Darwin said in 1836 that ‘ancient Rome in her imperial grandeur, would not have been ashamed of such an offering’. And for all Australia’s vast spaces and extraordinary wildlife, it is Sydney that leads the way when it comes to iconic architecture, world class dining and unabashed rivalry with the Old Country. Its renowned love of the outdoors is everywhere. Exertion is a pleasure when it involves such scenery as the spiky Opera House, the parakeet-filled Botanical Gardens and the smart gastro-wharf at Woolloomooloo. If you yearn for less cosmopolitan views, you can walk Sydney’s coastline, and get some idea of just why Port Jackson is one of the world’s greatest harbours. Zipping about on one of the many inexpensive ferries or catching a pricier water taxi from Circular Quay West is a good place to start. Climbing Harbour Bridge is hard to beat if you have the head for it - and the wallet (it costs from £120). When our fearless guide invites us to admire the bridge’s millions of rivets, peer down at the traffic steaming away below and appreciate the spot where the only man to survive falling from the bridge slipped (his hammer broke the surface of the water and, therefore, his fall), I grip the railing that bit tighter. Getting to the top feels the most enormous achievement and the view is breathtaking in every sense. Combining a city break in Sydney with a couple of days in the Blue Mountains, a mere 45 miles away, is a good way to glimpse just some of Australia’s hugely varied landscapes."

Lots of other interesting details, visuals are in this article that provides a nice "warm-up" for the excitement and potentials in Sydney. Good that those from England give high marks for how this key city in their former colony has done and become so popular. Have shared this story with those on our busy (over 57,000 views and nearly 3,500 posts) roll call.
