barcrab Posted December 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted December 20, 2013 Can anyone give me advice on Seabourn Shield versus other insurance? We always take insurance and this seems like a reasonably good policy since one can cancel for any reason and receive a credit for future cruise. Capri73 Posted December 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted December 20, 2013 (edited) We have always used AAA for Insurance.Price was very good and you have a choice of plans. I think SS is more expensive. Edited December 20, 2013 by Capri73
wripro Posted December 20, 2013 #3 Share Posted December 20, 2013 I always use other insurance. Better to have a third party insuring you.
Rare Keith1010 Posted December 20, 2013 #4 Share Posted December 20, 2013 My view on this is very simple. First off insurance is a personal decision. Seabourn Shield might be good for some people but it might not be for others. We do not know your situation. My recommendation is to go to http://www.insuremytrip.com (there are other sites but this is one of the better ones). You can fill in a few data points which includes number of passengers, age of each passenger, dates of travel and amount to insure and then it will provide you with a variety of policies, and companies that provide insurance and the cost. They have a very nice feature to compare policies and I use that to narrow my choices. From there just print out the comparison and then compare it manually to Seabourn Shield. For us I have found that I can actually get a more comprehensive insurance package by purchasing a policy from one of the third party insurance companies than the cruse line offers and pay less. Again, I don't like to rule things in or out and just recommend doing the research and it is so easy to do using the web site I provided you with. rl787 Posted December 20, 2013 #5 Share Posted December 20, 2013 Insurance is a very personal topic, some people prefer much higher levels of cover than others. Firstly I am in the UK, I do not have specialist cruise cover. I have a reasonably good annual travel policy. My cover includes standard cancellation cover for a range of reasons that to me are acceptable for claiming like accident, sickness, death of a relative and many more. In 2010 I had to cancel a cruise a day before travelling due to vomiting. The policy paid out in full for both of us without any problem. I had paid the extra premium for a higher claims limit as cruise trips can be costly. The point I am making is you may be able to get acceptable standard cover which may possibly meet your needs by purchasing a quality annual general policy. The premium I pay in the UK is about £300/$480 for the two of us but this covers all our other annual travel up to 90 days per trip. Again as Keith has said, there are so many insurance options available nowadays it is best to look up a range of policies and make a comparison to decide which policy on balance suits you best. 2SailingNomads Posted December 21, 2013 #6 Share Posted December 21, 2013 Other have made very good suggestions for researching your options. We always use a 3rd party provider. My understanding is that Seabourn Shield does not cover your air transport unless you are booked on flights by them, which we never are. To me the biggest risk, other than a sickness or death in the family that would cause us to have to cancel at the last moment, is not arriving at the departure port due to weather or air transport issues so I want to insure that aspect of the trip is covered. tv24 Posted December 22, 2013 #7 Share Posted December 22, 2013 Keith provides great advice. For our upcoming Seabourn trip we have purchased insurance from another company and got a much better price. Shop around, although admittedly this is a pretty boring and tedious area of shopping.
