G85 SS Posted December 23, 2013 #26 Share Posted December 23, 2013 We sailed Sept 2013. We were lucky with the tropics being calm, but it wasn't an average year. It's all luck of the draw. Jamaica, Cayman, and Cozumel were hot and humid like no other. We've decided to sail in May this year. Pretty much no risk of hurricanes, tropical weather, etc, and the prices are very similar, if not less, than Aug. Living on Florida as I do, I tend to keep an eye on the tropics more than a meteorologist. And they have been unusually quiet the past several years which can only mean one thing. How long until... :(
Merion_Mom Posted December 23, 2013 #27 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Having worked for a school for the past 13 years, summer is about the only time I can cruise for a week. We usually choose August. Our next cruise is August on the Oasis. We have cruised 3 times in August and never had an issue (knock wood) . That was my situation, too. I have had five hurricane-affected cruises in the past five years in August. Luck of the draw.
njmomof2 Posted December 23, 2013 #28 Share Posted December 23, 2013 We always sail the last week of August...kids finish camp and it's the last week before school starts. We cannot sail in May since school doesn't end until late June, and with the summer camp activities, they are scheduled for 8 straight weeks. So the last week it is. It's hot, it's humid, it rains. But we're sailing and the flowrider is working and we're all happy. If there is a threat of hurricane activity, they will divert. Since we don't go for the ports (couldn't care less whether it's east or west) we don't care if we have to change directions.
time4u2go Posted December 23, 2013 #29 Share Posted December 23, 2013 Doing a one week cruise from port canaveral with rci, is this a bad time of year to cruise around the Caribbean?? Seen a few comments about the hurricanes thought this was not an issue at this time????? Actually quite the opposite is true. Late August is nearing the peak of the hurricane season, statistically speaking. The actual peak is September 10.
