james'mommy Posted January 11, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 11, 2014 What is the smoking policy on NCL? We are non smokers and want to make sure we are not in a smoking area. We are in cabin 1211 on the Sun. TIA
Cubechick Posted January 11, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2014 If you're in a balcony cabin, you're potentially in a smoking area. Smoking is allowed on all balconies.
Ilovesailing Posted January 11, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Using the search engine here on CC there are a dozen pages or more on this topic that continues to be beaten to death. ColinIllinois Posted January 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 11, 2014 The policy is right there in NCL.com's FAQ's: http://www.ncl.com/faq#smoking
Macadian Posted January 11, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Indeed. If smoking is a problem for you, particularly regarding the use of your balcony, I suggest another cruise line such as 'X'. This is why we jumped ship for our next cruise from NCL, our usual cruise line.
rbrugler Posted January 11, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 11, 2014 We do not smoke and we always get a balcony. The only time we were bothered by smoke was when the neighbors beside us toward the front chain smoked all the time. The first evening we talked to them and they offered to cut down, and they did! We thanked them for it. Half of the Great Outdoors is smoking. Also, the upper level is smoking. The lower level smoking area tends to expand as people move ashtrays. I do not complain to smokers, but I have told the staff and have had the head of the buffet come out to talk it over. When we come back, the smoking area is smaller. Your cabin is toward the front. There are about 8 cabins ahead of yours. I doubt the smoke will be that bad. Also, if you go to the Great Outdoors and it bothers you, tell someone and tell them again. I just dont tell the smokers because I do not want an argument.
kcwingwalker Posted January 11, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 11, 2014 What is the smoking policy on NCL? We are non smokers and want to make sure we are not in a smoking area. We are in cabin 1211 on the Sun. TIA The only way you can avoid smoking is to change your cabin. There will be balconies above, below and on either side of you. Highly likely someone will be smoking and has paid for a balcony cabin to do so. Sorry:)
SissasMomE Posted January 11, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 11, 2014 Lots of melted butter on mine please ;) OP someone has already linked you NCL's policy, you will find it quite accurate. Your first indication you are in the smoking section will be ashtrays. No problem :)
CasinoCruzGirl Posted January 11, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 11, 2014 (edited) Sorry if it bothers non smokers but I DO smoke and PAID for a balcony to do so. Also what really aggravates me is when I'm in a casino on land there are a couple of areas where you are permitted to smoke more areas where smoking is prohibited then you have non smokers in the smoking area complain. That's where us smokers have to be go. Go to the non smoking area. God forbid someone smoked in non smoking area. It is aggravating to follow the rules and behave in a manner that you are legally entitled to and have someone complain and expect you to change your behavior. Anyone who books a balcony should know there is the possibility of someone smoking near your balcony.

NCL is headed in the same direction As Royal, Celebrity and Princess Oh, you know someone on the decision making board? You sound very sure of this or is this just a wishful guess. I've never read anything that leads me to this belief, so the OP's answer is still the same. All balconies allow smoking and therefore they know this before they cruise that they may have a smoker on any side of them. Not that there are many that actually say that this has been an issue. You are on an ocean with strong breezes blowing. Edited January 12, 2014 by che5904

NCL is headed in the same direction As Royal, Celebrity and Princess Would very much like to know where you obtained this information or is it your opinion? IMO NCL is doing well with its current smoking policies and bringing in many who not sailed NCL in the past.
crystalspin Posted January 12, 2014 #14 Share Posted January 12, 2014 I think Jen just spoke from NCL eliminating smoking from staterooms? I imagine you are right wingwalker about holding onto their (relatively) liberal policy compared to the other lower-end lines, as HAL probably will hold onto theirs for the more elegant lines -- until it does start to hurt them in pocketbook if it ever does. As a non-smoker I was fearful before our recent PC cruise, but even on the transit when we spent hours outside on the balcony (and the wind was not overstrong) we got lucky. Would sail with NCL again.

Before the casino was all non smoking they had a non smoking section. A guy was puffing away on a slot machine. Guess what? I politely asked him if he knew it was a non-smoking section. He apologized and said he did not and he immediately left. The shock of it all!!! Two people resolving an issue with mutual respect! Imagine that! Medtech2 Posted January 12, 2014 #18 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Enjoy it while you can. NCL is headed in the same direction As Royal, Celebrity and Princess No, actually they are not. I contacted corporate with the suggestion that they glass in the casino on Getaway to alleviate the smoke wafting all over 678 and was told, basically and nicely, "no".... They have no intention of changing anything as long as cabins are being booked.
TSJE4 Posted January 12, 2014 #19 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Enjoy it while you can. NCL is headed in the same direction As Royal, Celebrity and Princess I reckon Jen is probably right . Interesting read . http://www.no-smoke.org/learnmore.php?id=743 sorry Smokers you are becoming the minority and for good reason ( as an RN who works on a major high dependency surgical ward I could go into detail .. but i won't bore you with the gory details and statistics ) The smoking policy .. Almost put me off booking with NCL ... Almost went with Celebrity... so I can fully understand your concerns . I figured most of Europe still has lax anti smoking policy's so I was going to have to likely quietly choke through someone's filthy smoke anyway while I was on land as well . Hopefully I will avoid the casino .. And decks where most of the smokers are . Good luck Luck with your decision

Any cabin I am in is smokefree! Not ONCE did I ever notice a smoke smell in any cabin--they were cleaned that efffectively! It's the smoke wafting about public areas that is the problem, and that you are breathing. Since statistically smokers spend more in the casino and on alcohol, which keeps my cruise cost low, I don't have a problem with that--I just want the smoke CONTAINED. Not exactly sure why they didn't do that when they built the ship, since they already knew there was a problem with the Epic in that regard. Royal andX have had GREAT response both customer satisfaction and revenue wise with their policy changes. The entire industry is watching. Even European lines are moving towards a Royal-esque policy We'll see...
Vagabond TimeLord Posted January 12, 2014 #23 Share Posted January 12, 2014 Just for the record.....in case NCL is reading... the main reason we still cruise with NCL is because their policy allows for smoking on the balcony. I also book a lot of smoking clients on NCL when HAL or Seabourn is out of their spend wish. Thank you, NCL, for being reasonable in your decisions on this matter. Interesting read . http://www.no-smoke.org/learnmore.php?id=743 All I read here was that NCL was making cabins smoke free..... which they already did in 2012. I didn't see anything about NCL adopting a smoke free ship, smoke free balcony's, etc. Did I miss it? Harriet

In case NCL is reading..... now that I know, the main reason I will probably not book another NCL is that so many smokers are their customers. This is good information, sorry NCL. I was considering the Jade or Celebrity Sapphire for the summer. Guess it will be X. Sorry NCL for your policies. THis makes so much sense why my adjoining cabin cruisers on the gem were smoking in their cabin, even though it was not allowed and why I was surrounded by smokers on many balconies. Thanks for posting. As I said, good information.
