Ken at the beach Posted January 16, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 16, 2014 It is up to the staff at AO. It depends on how many kids in the different age groups are signed up as well. Some have reported that they were able to get their child into a different age group and others have said they were not able to. Best to ask once on board. There isn't a 6-9 group. The age groups are 3-5, 6-8 and 9-11. ginadc Posted January 16, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 16, 2014 I have only had experience with "age group switching" in the downward direction--in other words, they let my 6-year-old older daughter join in with the 3-5 age group in Adventure Ocean on the Liberty Med cruise in fall 2012, so that she could be with her then 4-year-old brother. I don't know how flexible they are about letting kids move up to an older age group.
At Sea 4Ever Posted January 16, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Years ago was on a sailing where there was only 50 people under the age of 18 so needless to say the staff let everyone mingle. That was a Hawaii sailing on the vision. I don't think that would happen now a days considering stricter enforcing of the rules.
cb at sea Posted January 16, 2014 #6 Share Posted January 16, 2014 They are more likely to let the older child move down, than to let the youngest move up. Give it a try in the proper age groups....it may be just fine!
DrD Posted January 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Last year my 8 year old (about 6 weeks shy of 9) was allowed to go to the 9-11 yo group to be with his brother, after being "evaluated" in his own age group for a 2 hour session. So to me they are (or were) pretty strict.
GracieCat0_1 Posted January 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2014 They've also broken kids into groups by single year depending on how many kids are on board so potentially, it might be even harder to change groups. Never hurts to ask though!

Never hurts to ask though! Never heard of a ship doing that before. Was that Royal Caribbean or another cruise line?
skyas Posted January 17, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 17, 2014 My child was also 6 weeks shy of being 6 and she was allowed to stay in the 6 age group after the staff evaluated her for a session.
