Jim Henry Posted January 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2014 My thanks to all for your advice on taking an Alaskan cruise. Your input on cruise lines, food, round-trip, one way, land trips, etc helped me make an informed decision. Working with a travel agent we decided the best trip was on HAL sea-land northbound departing Vancouver June 1, 2014. We will have two nights in Denali and our last night in Anchorage flying home next day from Anchorage. Although we probably could of saved on the land tour, I have peace of mind knowing that all arrangements will be made in advance. My wife and I and my two daughters are excited and look forward to an adventure. Meanwhile my TA will send us additional details on how to spend our full free day in Anchorage, but I welcome any suggestions from this forum. mapleleaves Posted January 26, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2014 do you have a full day in Anchorage? or does that day include your transfer to Anchorage? And what are your interests? Look at the town web site for ideas. I think it's http://www.anchorage.net If you do in fact have a full day, I'd suggest renting a car and driving along the Turnagain Arm .... pan for gold, Wildlife Conservation Center, look for dall sheep along the ridges, Potters Marsh, Portage Glacier, Alyeksa Resort, etc. All within 50 miles of Anc. Look at the drives called 'Turnagain Arm' and "portage Valley & Whittier" in this link: http://www.alaska.org/things-to-do/scenic-drives Or in that same link, look under DESTINATIONS to read about If you disembark in Seward, consider spending the day there and catch the evening train back to Anchorage. Northern Aurora Posted January 26, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 26, 2014 Are you interested in our Alaskan Native (First People) cultures? Would the Alaska Native Heritage Center be a consideration?
SPacificbound Posted January 27, 2014 #4 Share Posted January 27, 2014 The Alaska Native Heritage Center as "Northern Aurora" posted is something we are planning on. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g60880-d103028-Reviews-Alaska_Native_Heritage_Center-Anchorage_Alaska.html Here are some other ideas. http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g60880-Activities-c25-Anchorage_Alaska.html

Great site. Thanks MapleLeaves. I think we will rent a car and take in the many sites within 50 miles of anchorage. We will have one full day to do this.
