While many places and businesses may accept US$ you will get hit hard on the exchange rate. Buy it from your bank prior to coming. Your dollar is running about 10% higher than ours now so 1$ US will get you close to $1.10 Cdn. You can also use your credit card for virtually everything and the bank will do the conversion to US funds. Trying to use US dollars you run the risk of it not being accepted or if it is being taken at par and you loose there as well.

Use CAD or credit cards.

Where credit cards are accepted please note that you will be charged a foreign transaction fee of up to 3% of the USD amount charged. Check with your credit card company on what they charge or get one a card that doesn't like Capital One or Chase Sapphire.

You can also get CAD cash from virtually any ATM (fees may apply).

Many threads on this exact topic.

My view is that when traveling in a foreign country, the right thing to do is to use their currency. Canadian dollars are readily available at banks in the US and at ATM's once you reach Canada.

Get some of our "funny" money and enjoy your trip and not have to worry about whether or not someone with accept US Cash.

We have re a l funny money now. All currency from 5$ and up are the new style. They are made from a plastic like material with a semi transparent hollogram that you can sea from both sides. The Canadian penny isn't used anymore. I'll try and post a picture of some bills.
