I am trying to research Genoa. We will be there on a Sunday in August off the Celebrity Eclipse. We have never been here. What would people recommend we do?

We are quite happy to use public transport and but also hire taxi at port or private tour although these seem very expensive.

Please recommend anything you have enjoyed.

Thank you.

Genoa is walkable, from port you can walk into city. Museums ( Palazzo reale, Palazzi Rosso and Blanco) locate in walking distance from port.

You can go to museums, take funiculairs to hill to enjoi panoramic view of the city, you can go to Nervi walk along sea. If you 'd like you can go to Portofino- it is doable as well.

Landmarks and highlights in Genoa

Via Garibaldi is the main street of the historic center of Genoa. It's famous for the beautiful palaces from the 16th century.

The Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) is an aristocratic palace built in the 17th century.

Palazzo San Giorgio is a palace dedicated to St. George. It became the home of the Bank of Saint George (in the 15th century).

La Lanterna is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It's an important symbol of Genoa and the main lighthouse of the town.

The birthplace of Christopher Columbus. There is a small museum with archives and artefacts from the life of this great discoverer.

Piazza De Ferrari is a central square in Genova. It's an important financial and business district of the city and famous for its big beautiful fountain.

If you have sufficient time you can visit the beautiful Cinque Terre by train from Genoa. When consulting the train timetable between Genoa and the Cinque Terre, put the name one of the five villages - Monterosso al Mare (biggest village),Vernazza (most picturesque village),Corniglia, Manarola (oldest village) , Riomaggiore, as destination. A train ride can take between 70 and 90 minutes and will cost about €9 per person (one way).

You should pay particular attention to the following -what is the starting station in Genoa (Stazione Principe is the best option for cruise passengers)

-it is a direct train or do you have to change trains

- in some cases you can also go to La Spezia Centrale first and take the local train from there to the Cinque Terre

If you are docked at the cruise port of Genoa and you want to make an excursion by train, then you best depart from the main railway station Stazione Principe. This is within walking distance of the cruise port. From Principe metro station, walk right. Follow the street and turn left. Soon you arrive at Piazza Acquaverde, where you can see the entrance of the station on your left. https://maps.google.hr/maps?saddr=Nepoznata+cesta&daddr=Salita+della+Visitazione&hl=hr&ll=44.415935,8.920619&spn=0.003924,0.009291&sll=44.416494,8.921456&sspn=0.003924,0.009291&geocode=FUO2pQIdYReIAA%3BFX_BpQId7ySIAA&t=m&dirflg=w&mra=ltm&z=17

From Genoa to Portofino

Since there is no train station in Portofino, take the train to the nearby Santa Margherita Ligure. There run 1-2 trains per hour from railway station Stazione Principe. The journey takes between 40 minutes and 1 hour. For a ticket you pay € 3.30 to € 6.50 per person (one way, 2nd class). Better check the train timetable between Genoa and San Margherita Ligure, Portofino in advance.

From the station in Santa Margherita Ligure is a good bus service to the center of Portofino. Bus N° 82 runs every 15 minutes between S. Margherita Ligure station and Piazza della Liberta in Portofino. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs € 1.50 per person. The bus ticket is valid until 100 minutes after validation.

Buy your bus ticket in advance at one of the outlets or at the ticket machine. On the bus, you pay double.

I hope that will help
