Transportation from Basel to Rome

Recommended Posts

Considering a NCL cruise from Rome - 2 days after disembarking from a Viking cruise in Basel. Need help with transportation. If we take train, better from Basel or Zurich? If Zurich, how do we get from Basel to Zurich? Different classes on trains? Any idea of cost or sites I can research? Your advice is appreciated.

There is a Eurocity train from Basel SBB to Milano Centrale where you can change to a Eurostar Italia to Roma Termini, there are several departures every day and the travel time around 7,5 hours.

Lots of possibilities. Most direct is the already-mentioned Basel-Milan-Rome option (note: your ship is actually departing from Civitavecchia, so you need to take another train there). You can go through Zurich if you want, continuing either directly to Milan or even via Chur to pick up the very scenic Bernina Express.

Best site for checking cross-country train schedules is actually the Germain rail site, Bahn. For Italy trains, look at Trenitalia. Also look at The Man in Seat 61 for advice on rail travel in Europe.

For a one-way ticket Easyjet would be the best option. When you add in all the fees, baggage charges and seat selection you can find a ticket from around $100 to $150 one way. This is usually less expensive than the train.

While train all the way through is certainly an option. You could break the trip up and enjoy the trip.

The daily Basel to Milan direct train does take 4 hours and 4 minutes. It is a comfortable train. First class tickets can be found for around $130 and Second class at around $85. That is if found on a sale price online in advance.

Then there are very nice trains from Milan to Rome with many non-stop options, taking just 2 hours 55 minutes. The best fares for Premium is around 50 euros and Business at 58 euro right now or $69 to $80. Economy standard tickets can be found for less sometimes, but usually not at that much savings.
