Purchasing On Board Credit

While exploring the my ncl site, I see you can purchase on board credits. It is exactly as it sounds? I can "pre load" my account starting now?

 

Can I make muliple purchases, say every week until we sail? Or is it one time shot?

I am sure if you want to load your account multiple time before you leave you can do that most likely up until you sail - check out the NCL website for specifics. But we never do this - we use a credit card and pay the balance when it appears on our card after the trip. That way we don't end up with a lot of credit that we have to use before we leave the ship - why give them your money in advance? Plus you don't get any points for OBC like you do on your credit card.

 

If you are worried about having the money to spend, instead of buying OBC, stick it in a savings account or your sock drawer;)

Thanks for the financial planning advice, didn't realize I had asked for it :rolleyes:. I never leave money on the table, so there is no worry about having too much credit - I know exactly what we will spend. Its how I budget for a trip. When we go to WDW, I load up on the gift cards. To each their own.

I'm a regular on a Disney forum and its the same thing over there too. The hot topics over there are the dreaded "refillable mug" "chair hogs" and "pool hopping".

The question I have is if you have money left at end of cruise can you take it out as cash at the casino wicket?

Not that you asked, but I find no good reason to give somebody money in advance. Things happen, and then you have to get it back. Or, they might lose track of the OBC and you spend the cruise dealing with front desk staff that can not help. Etc. etc. etc.

Don't forget asking how to make breakfast using a coffee maker or packing a George Forman Grill, or about ordering two buns for a double burger to split (bun splitters we call them at my house LOL).

You can purchase it as many times as you like until about 10 days before cruise. We cruise as a family so I buy some for each cabin prior to going. The only thing is any extra will be sent to you as a check after the cruise. Mine took about 2 weeks to get the check in the mail. I never tried the casino, so I don't know if you can take it out there.

Some of us like to spread the bill over more than one credit card payment.

Since the OBC purchased is billed to the credit card right then it is paid for before the shipboard account is paid.

I did this for my last cruise. I had about $200 OBC I bought and Spa Credits as we'll. I'm a terrible saver so that's why I did it and it worked great for me. Have a fun cruise.

I wasn't giving financial advice. I always buy trip insurance and most don't. If you want to buy credit and pay in advance go for it. I really didn't mean to get your back up.

I haven't bought any on the website but what I do is call reservations and have it directly added to my on board account. Our last trip we only had to pay $69 more then what I had on our account.

 

I like having as much paid for before I go. I am pretty good at knowing what we are going to spend.

Thanks. I love having everything paid for too. I bought one for each cabin today via the website and will continue to do so until about 2 weeks prior to sailing. While at a CVS today, I bought $150 in a Marriott cards for our night in Miami prior to the cruise. So that's all paid for. :) got a killer rate at the JW Marriott Miami.

 

DH just agreed to the UBP too, someone on a separate thread broke it down to include the soda and waters during the day, and then the light bulb went off and it seemed to be worthwhile.

I have done the same. Our upcoming cruise on April 27th is completely paid for. I even have the cash I will need for shore excursions on a Chase Liquid card that I will grab before we board. Now all I have to do is wait 23 more days. OR 19 days til we leave. :D:):cool:

We do this every cruise. I just called ncl and they said anything purchased 48 hours or more before the cruise it will count.

So there is no limit to the amount of obc you can buy? I have only been on CCL and I think there was a limit to the amount of individual gift cards you can use.

OP here. The OBC I bought on Friday, is in my account at ncl.com. I'm buying more tomorrow. So cool to have this extra stash once we sail. :)

Gift cards may be different than a straight out on board credit. I don't have a clue, but I bought obc.

I buy OBC for each of our cruises. I don't like to have bills when I get back from vacation so I try to pre-pay as much as possible. On the last cruise we had several hundred left on the tab and we were able to take it out at the casino on the final night. You just take your room card to the casino cage and have it liked to your OBC account. This was easy to do and we did not have to wait for a check. Hope you have a great time.
